This is THE myspace site of the (1-0, 0-0 Big East) RUTGERS Scarlet Knights Football Team.
Rutgers University is The Birthplace of College Football. Rutgers and Princeton played the first collegiate football match on November 6, 1869, where the present-day Rutgers gymnasium now stands. RUTGERS won the game, with a score of 6 runs to Princeton's 4.
Today, Rutgers is a member of the Big East Conference, (in football since 1991, all other sports since 1995) a collegiate athletic conference consisting of 16 colleges and universities from the East Coast and Midwestern regions of the United States. The Big East is a member of the Bowl Championship Series.
In 2005, Rutgers accepted a bowl bid to play Arizona State University in the Insight Bowl in Phoenix, Arizona. The Scarlet Knights lost to the ASU Sun Devils 45 to 40. The only other bowl appearance for the Scarlet Knights was in 1978 at the Garden State Bowl, held at Giants Stadium, also against Arizona State; Rutgers lost that game by a score of 34 to 18. One hundred and twenty-five years after Rutgers and Princeton first inaugurated the tradition of American football, Rutgers Stadium, a 42,000 seat facility, opened in 1994. The year 2006 brought back the pandemonium in piscataway for Rutgers football. 30 years after the undefeated scarlet knights had their most historic season to note, these scarlet knights looked to put their mark on school history. Rutgers started the season off with a convincing win in North Carolina and then followed that up with three impressive home victories over Illinois in a shutout, Ohio and Howard. The knights then traveled to South Florida as a ranked team for the first time in 25 years to take on the Bulls on ESPN. The knights pulled off an impressive victory 22-20 and got their first big east victory of the 2006 campaign. Next was off to Navy and facing the challenge of stopping Navy's outstanding running game. The knights responded and played great defense, shutting out the Midshipmen 34-0. With the team 6-0 and ranked nationally, there was much reason for excitement for Rutgers fans and the state of New Jersey in general. Next came a very good Pitt team at Heinz field in Pittsburg. The knights came out and shut down Pitt Qb Tyler Palko and the Panthers with a 20-10 victory. With the team rolling, Greg Schiano and the knights traveled back home for a 2 game homestand that included a very good Louisville Cardinal team lurking in the future. But, first things first, the Knights battled with the Conneticut Huskies and ran away with a 24-13 win that would set the stage for arguably the biggest athletics event in school history, the 9-0, 15th ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. the 9-0, 3rd Ranked Louisville Cardinals. With the stadium completely packed and sold out and the whole new jersey and new york area excited and the nation watching on ESPn, Rutgers came back from a 18 point deficit to win the biggest game in Rutgers history on a Jeremy Ito field goal late in the 4th quarter. The game was later named as the best game of the 2006 season by ESPN. With the world on their backs, the national championship contenders headed to Cincinnatti with their undefeated record and highest ever, 7th national ranking. The knights were caught by surprise and their undefeated season came to an end when the bearcats upset the knights 30-11. The knights kept choppin' on and responded by routing the Syracuse orange 38-7 in Rutgers stadium final home game of the season. With big east champ hopes, the knights traveled to West Virginia for their last game of the regular season. The knights were upset and set out of a BCS game due to the heart-breaking 30T loss to the Mountaineers. The knights were then faced to play the Kansas State Wildcats in the inaugural game of the Texas Bowl in Houston. Rutgers defense once again led the way giving up just a field goal and ray rice and tim brown led the offensive attack, as Rutgers claimed their first ever bowl win with a impressive 37-10 victory. There is much optimisim for 2007 as the Knights hope to make the leap to playing in a BCS bowl game.
