2002 saw the formation of BIG BADA BOOM a Wellington based, Desi outfit consisting of 2 DJs, 3 MCs and 1 Percussionist. With their first gig at The Cross Bar, in Wellington, Big Bada Boom took off and the group has not looked back since. Aside from the instant lure of phat Bhangra tunes and grooving Bollywood favourites, Big Bada Boom has always set out to push the envelope when its comes to South Asian music in NZ. Drawing on other influences such as Dancehall, Reggae, Dub, Drum n Bass, Hip Hop and its more popular cousin RnB, the selectors and MCs that perform at Big Bada Boom are the pioneers and have created the NZ equivalent of UKs Asian Underground scene here in Aoteoroa. The crew of 6 have in the past have played along side acts like Talvin Singh, Beatrootz and recently played at Wellington City's infamous Cuba St Carnival 07.
Big Bada Boom is an underground extravaganza of dhol laden beats, coupled with lyrical madness, and some down right righteous rhythms all rolled into one night of fun. A night with BBB consists of a whole heap of booty shakin, grooving and all your favourite Bollywood and Bhangra tunes for you to move to - these brothers got skills!
DEBUT EP
Since August 2006 though, Big Bada Boom has been working on pushing those boundaries even further. With a growing live aspect to their gigs, the band saw this as an opportunity for them to develop their own take on South Asian music. The EP is a first taste of that unique South Asian experience in New Zealand.
Big Bada Boom's EP is a narrative of the boys' perspectives of culture, traditions, art, identity and politics. They weave a story that is both distinctly Asian and undeniably New Zealand.
