I started writing from a young kid, if I wasn’t kicking the soccer ball, or at the beach, I was writing. when I was 21 i went to fiji for a few months. i taught in prac PE for a while at lautoka high school, and then the minister of education took me and some uni friends to a village called numbulevu.
I hurt my leg on the way, trying to step on a rock over the river with soap suds, ouch. the minister performed a ceremony over my leg that required stitches, and placed some herbal grass in the wound and wrapped it. i had to sit still in the village as there was not a hospital or nurse for miles, and only by horse back, however, I was blesses as i was in the most amazing place, with little fijian boys around me, that would take us across the river in bamboo boats, the water boiled on three set stones from the ground, the wilderness around us, our beds were under bamboo rafters, it was breathtaking. it was here,
I wrote my first song, just to say thankyou to the village for having us there over three days. I sang it, and I couldn’t play guitar at this stage, so one of the other guys, ross, put some music to it, and we sang it for them, while they were sitting on the grass hill, watching with tears of joy, it was an unforgettable moment that will always be with me, by the time we were driven back to the main town, my song was published in the local paper, the fijian times.
It was from this point on, that i knew i should be a song writer, so at 21, my parents, and my brother bought me my first ever guitar, a 12 string yamaha, electric/acoustic, and i still play it to this day. i vowed that i wanted to have a career in music, and i wanted to give out the money i made to children all over the world, that are not actually receiving the benefits of world aid, like this little village that i found in the depths of fiji, yet with merely nothing, they gave me everything, they gave me an achievable dream, and an understanding far greater than anything i will ever learn, that life, is what you make of it. you can choose to live it and get by, or you can choose to live it and make a difference. I have chosen to make a difference.
