One must care about a world one will never see
Stung Meanchy municipal waste dump located in the southern part of the city Phnom penh; Cambodia. The dump covers about 100 acres, almost 6 hectares. Roughly 2,000 people, about 800 of which are children, live and work there. Some of these children are orphans abandoned by their parents, who cannot afford to support them. I saw children as young as three (photo in gallery) working in this waste dump. The children scavenge, search for plastics, scrap metal, anything that can be recycled, rubbish that can be collected and sold for money. On average a child can earn roughly about 50 pence a day, (working from sunrise to sunset)
Many children have been killed or seriously injured searching for rubbish, by being run over by dumpster trucks, garbage lorries and tractors. Many children fall in pit holes and are suffocated by garbage falling on top of them. I saw children eating rotten food found on the dump. All of the children there are under nourished, have sores and infections all over their bodies. The swarms of flies, insects and maggots don’t make their infections any easier to keep clean. (in photo gallery pic 8 you can see a boy outside his home which is an old mattress covered in black dots - these are flies) The smell is indescribable! No child should have to live in these conditions. It is a living hell, many girls as young as 7 are raped and abused by the other older workers on the dump (this is another cause close to my heart, to help stop the child abuse in Phnom penh). There are many children living on the streets in the city. These children should be playing not working and living in these conditions.
The aim of Rainbow Child Foundation is to build shelters, provide education and inprove these children's lives!!! RAINBOW CHILD FOUNDATION is a not for profit organisation set to help underprivileged children all over the world in a variety of ways. The analogy of the rainbow is that each colour is beautiful by itself but when put together in harmony they create this great spectacle we call the rainbow and at the end of every rainbow there is a treasure, the treasure that lies within us, and that treasure is what we are hoping to share with every child.
