============================================================ ============================================================ = 3 DRUG DEFENDANTS TO TESTIFY AGAINST PARSON CLAN ============================================================ ============================================================ ============================================================ ====================== Members of a family accused of bringing a ....reign of terror'' to their community through a ruthlessly efficient crack cocaine business can strike three names from their list of most trusted friends. Gary Wendel Allen, Anthony Leon Burney and Gary Denard Jones recently agreed to aid the government's effort to imprison 10 other members of the Parson gang, a clan prosecutors say used violence and intimidation to expand a street-corner drug operation into a crack-based dynasty. Jury selection in the federal drug case began Wednesday and testimony is expected to begin next week. The trial could last two months. The 10 defendants - Kelby Franklin, Kemmye Parson, Gary Parson, Ronald Parson, Willie Parson, Stacey Parson, Tony Martin, Taylor Thomas, Terrance Hutchins and Derrick Smith - are charged in a 19-count indictment with participating in a crack distribution ring that operated in predominantly black neighborhoods surrounding Tamarind Avenue in West Palm Beach between 1990 and 1995. If convicted, each defendant could be sentenced up to life in prison. The Parsons' reputation for violence has wrapped U.S. District Judge Daniel T.K. Hurley's courtroom in a blanket of heightened security. The bench behind the defendants was packed Wednesday with U.S. marshals and other law enforcement officers on loan to the marshals service, and an extra metal detector is temporarily in use on the second floor of the federal courthouse. Defense attorneys complained the heavy security will prejudice jurors and will hamper the attorneys' own efforts to communicate with their clients. ....This morning I tried to give my client (Stacey Parson) a Lifesaver and I was informed it was a security breach,'' attorney Stuart Adelstein told Hurley. But Hurley said he would not interfere with the precautions. The three defendants who have agreed to testify for prosecutors Ellen Cohen and John McMillan hope to receive reduced sentences for their cooperation. Under federal sentencing guidelines, each now faces at least 10 years in prison, but they could receive lighter sentences based on their anticipated assistance. All three pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the case. In return, prosecutors dropped other charges against them. Defense attorneys note that one of the three, Gary Jones, was already serving another sentence and knew he would probably spend the rest of his life in prison unless he agreed to testify. ....This case is going to come down to the credibility of these witnesses on the stand,'' defense attorney Paul McKenna said. Police said they resolved to topple the Parsons' empire in 1994 after 61-year-old Alberta Burden was slain to keep her from testifying against gang leader Dumas Parson in the shooting death of his wife. No one has been charged in Burden's death.
