Francis est un artiste des arts visuels de réputation internationale. Son travail interroge les images mutantes qui, par la posture du corps, peuvent susciter de nouvelles interprétations. Avec diverses matières animales et humaines, il étudie le rôle de l’indétermination déstabilisant le performeur. Il interroge également les traces du performatif qui se matérialisent sous forme d’installations, photographies et vidéographies.
Né en 1980 à Québec (Canada) d’une mère d’origine laotienne, il fut adopté très jeune par une famille de Québec. En 1998-1999, il fit ses études collégiales en Arts Plastiques au Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy à Québec ; de 2000-2003, il obtint un baccalauréat en Arts Visuels à l’Université Laval à Québec ; enfin de 2005-2007, il compléta une maîtrise spécialisée en Art Performance et en Installation à l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi. En 2004, il participa à une enrichissante collaboration avec Iňaki Lopez Castro avec qui il développa plusieurs actions et installations itinérantes à travers les rues de Valence en Espagne. Lors de cette même année, il devient co-fondateur du collectif Les Frittes Frettes avec Francis Arguin. Ils ont développé ensemble un travail basé sur l’intervention instinctive et programmée. Entre 2002 et 2008, il a participé à plusieurs projets et échanges nationaux et internationaux de performance avec Richard Martel et Inter, Le Lieu, centre en art actuel.
Depuis 2002, Francis O’Shaughnessy a réalisé plus de 75 performances différentes dans plus de 40 festivals internationaux tenus dans 14 pays d’Europe, d’Asie et des Amériques. Il a donné régulièrement des ateliers et des conférences sur son travail et sur l’histoire de la performance dans des collèges et des universités, notamment à l’Université du Québec à Chicoutimi, au Département Inter média à l’Université de Cracovie au Studio d’art performance (Pologne) et à l’Université d’Hildesheim (Allemagne). L’organisation d’événements intéresse Francis O’Shaughnessy depuis 2001. À ses débuts, il organisait des soirées de performance interuniversitaires entre l’Université Laval à Québec et l’UQAM et Concordia à Montréal. En 2005, il a organisé une tournée de performance dans quatre villes sur la Péninsule Ibérienne en Europe. La même année, il a été Co-commissaire avec Michael La Chance pour un événement au Lieu, centre en art actuel à Québec. En 2006, il a partagé son statut de co-commissaire avec Jan Swidzinski pour l’élogieux Festival International Contextual of Art/ the Différences en Pologne. En 2007, il a collaboré avec Boris Nieslony pour l’événement The 15th Art Conference dont il coordonna le volet Saguenayen à Espace Virtuel. À la fin de cette même année, il initia Art Nomade, rencontre internationale d’art performance de Chicoutimi, étoffant ainsi un « réseautage » reliant plusieurs centres d’artistes, organismes et institutions du Québec. En 2009, il renouvela l’expérience Art Nomade avec le centre d’artistes Le Lobe à Saguenay et fut commissaire d’une tournée de performances entre le Saguenay et les provinces maritimes avec Espace Virtuel.
Travaillant activement dans des productions parallèles, Francis O’Shaughnessy explore d’autres sphères artistiques. De 1999 à aujourd’hui, il s’est produit sur plusieurs scènes musicales du Québec. En 2003, il présenta ses premières expositions de peintures. Entre 2004-2007, il exposa des installations dans divers lieux alternatifs, à la Galerie l’Oeuvre de l’Autre, Séquence, Toqué Rouge et au Musée Guillermo Enrique Hudson (Argentine). En 2007, il s’est mis à la photographie et a exposé au Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales (Cuba), à l’événement MORFO (Guatemala) et à Langage Plus. Ensuite, il a collaboré à un projet en danse et en arts visuels à Tangente, danse contemporaine à Montréal avec Marie-Hélène Bellavance. En 2008, il participa à la résidence Pilotprojekt Gropiusstadt (Allemagne) avec Sara Létourneau. Entre 2007-2009, il s’est initié à la vidéographie et a réalisé trois courts-métrages. Son premier, Henri et Charlotte, fut retenu à Vidéastes Recherchés et à Vidéo à Foison (France). Ses autres, Mon divan de bois et La Bourge furent terminés à la fin 2009.
En 2002, il remporta le Prix Cristal, mention du public, au Carnaval de Québec en sculpture internationale sur neige. En 2004, il fut finaliste au concours Albert-Dumouchel, Conseil québécois de l’estampe à Montréal et remporta une bourse de la ville de Québec pour ses travaux audacieux en peinture. Entre 2004-2009, il fut récipiendaire de plusieurs bourses de déplacements du Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, Conseil des Arts du Canada et de l’Office Québec-Amérique pour la Jeunesse pour ses productions en Asie, en Europe et dans les Amériques. En 2008-2009, le Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, la Conférence régionale des élus du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean et la Fondation Timi lui ont attribué différents types de bourses en recherche/création pour réaliser ses productions artistiques émérites. Et enfin, en 2009, il fut félicité par Milles mots d’amour-Les Impatients pour avoir écrit la plus belle lettre d’amour du Québec.

Francis is a visual artist with an international reputation. His work questions mutant images that, according to the body’s posture, may give rise to new interpretations. With various forms of animal and human matter, he studies the role of the destabilizing indetermination of the performer. He also questions the traces of the performative that materialize in the form of installations, photography and videography.
Born in 1980 in Quebec (Canada) to a mother of Laotian origin, he was adopted at a very young age by a family from Quebec City. In 1998-1999, he studied Fine Arts at the collegial level at the Notre-Dame-de-Foy campus in Quebec City ; from 2000-2003, he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts at Laval University in Quebec City and lastly, from 2005-2007, he completed a Master’s specializing in Performance Art and Installation at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. In 2004, he participated in an enriching collaboration with Iňaki Lopez Castro, with whom he developed several travelling acts and installations across the streets of Valencia, Spain. During this same year, he became the co-founder of the collective, Les Frittes Frettes with Francis Arguin. Together, they developed a body of work based on programmed and instinctive intervention. Between 2002 and 2008, he participated in several projects and national and international performance exchanges with Richard Martel and Inter, Le Lieu, centre en art actuel.
Since 2002, Francis O’Shaughnessy has carried out more than 75 different performances in over 40 international festivals held in 14 countries across Europe, Asia and the Americas. He has regularly given workshops and conferences on his work and on the history of performance in colleges and universities, notably at the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi, at the Department Inter media at the University of Krakow, at the Studio of Performance Art (Poland) and at the University of Hildesheim (Germany). Francis has taken an interest in the organization of events since 2002. In his beginnings, he organized inter-university evenings of performance between University Laval in Quebec City and UQAM and Concordia in Montreal. In 2005, he organized a performance tour of 4 cities on the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. That same year, he was co-curator, along with Michael La Chance, for the Lieu, Centre en Art Actuel event in Quebec City. In 2006, he shared the status of co-curator with Jan Swidinski for the highly recognized Festival International Contextual of Art/ the Différences in Poland. In 2007, he collaborated with Boris Nieslony for the The 15th Art Conference event, for which he coordinated a section dedicated to the Saguenay region in the “Espace Virtuel”. And the end of this same year, he initiated Art Nomade, rencontre internationale d’art performance de Chicoutimi, thus reinforcing a network linking together several artists’ centers, organizations and institutes throughout Quebec. In 2009, he renewed the Art Nomade experience with the Le Lobe artists’ center in Saguenay and was the curator of a performance tour between the Saguenay region and the Maritime Provinces with “Espace Virtuel”.
Working actively on separate productions, Francis O’Shaughnessy also explores other artistic spheres. From 1999 up to the present day, he has performed music in numerous Quebec concert halls. In 2003, he presented his first painting exhibit. Between 2004 and 2007, he exhibited installations in various alternative places, such as the Galerie l’Oeuvre de l’Autre, Séquence, Toqué Rouge and at the Musée Guillermo Enrique Hudson (Argentina). In 2007, he took up photography and exhibited at the Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales (Cuba), at the MORFO event (Guatemala) and at Langage Plus. He then collaborated on both a dance and a visual arts project in Tangente, danse contemporaine in Montreal with Sara Létourneau. Between 2007 and 2009, he introduced himself to videography and directed three short films. His first one, Henri et Charlotte was selected for Vidéastes Recherchés and Vidéo à Foison (France). His others, Mon divan de bois and La Bourge were completed in 2009.
In 2002, he won the Prix Cristal publics choice award at Quebec City’s Winter Carnival in the international snow sculpting competition. In 2004, he was a finalist in the Albert-Dumouchel, Conseil québécois de l’estampe contest in Montreal and won a bursary from the city of Quebec for his audacious work in painting. Between 2004 and 2009, he was the recipient of several travel grants from the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Office Québec-Amérique pour la Jeunesse for his productions in Asia, in Europe and in the Americas. In 2008-2009, the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec, the Conférence régionale des élus du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and the Fondation Timi accorded him different types of research and creation grants for the realization of his highly skilled artistic productions. And lastly, in 2009, he was congratulated by Milles mots d’amour-Les Impatients for having writted the most beautiful love letter in all of Quebec.
