I'm a professional writer who has written everything from travel pieces and celebrity interviews to research papers and product brochures. I love being a writer because it's like a license to learn about anything. The words, "I'm writing a piece about. . ." gives me access to experts on every subject. And when it comes to writing fiction, I get to make things up. In any other profession, that's called lying!
I've met doctors, teachers, plumbers, and lawyers who say they've always wanted to be a writer, but I've never met a writer who wanted to be anything else. While I can imagine many things, I can't imagine not writing.
