Spitfire Charlie

About Me

Spitfire Charlie are a 3-piece indie/rock band based in Leeds. The band consists of singer/guitarist John Roberts, bassist Ben Kreczak and drummer Chris Hide, who all at one point or another studied Creative Music and Sound Technology at Leeds Metropolitan University. The band “draw on an array of contemporary influences but fortunately the results are an impressive mainstream pastiche that manages to retain authenticity in a fiercely competitive indie/rock market”. In the last 12 months, the band have been gigging and recording vigorously, and have supported the likes of The Pigeon Detectives and The Others, had their white label single “No Need to Fight” played on Radio 1 by Steve Lamacq, and were one of the 30 bands given the opportunity to play at Leeds Festival by playing in the Futuresound competition. The band have gained a reputation for being a truly energetic and exciting band to watch live, combining choppy and intricate guitars and drums with “the born to sing gravely tones of singer John Roberts”, who “makes most of his contemporaries seem rather weedy in comparison”.

Sounds Like: Spitfire Charlie – Hard To Let You Go

Leeds 3-piece Spitfire Charlie have supported the likes of The Pigeon Detectives and The Others, and their influence can clearly be heard on the two tracks on display here. Indeed, “Hard To Let You Go” contains an interesting and impressive mix of memorable and powerful guitar riffs and contains a chorus with definite mainstream potential. With a few Bloc Party-esque guitar parts added into the mix and a genuine feeling of energy and enthusiasm running throughout, “Hard To Let You Go” proves to be an effective sing-along anthem which will surely become a live favourite amongst fans.

B-side “Start Our Own Religion” is in a similar vein – packed full of boundless energy and memorable hooks – but it can’t quite match the quality of the A-side. Overall, while this is nothing particularly new, it still manages to remain fresh and interesting and if the band can produce a few more tracks of the quality of “Hard To Let You Go” then there’s no reason why they can’t go on to achieve a good degree of success.

Spitfire Charlie – “Hard To Let You Go”

Since reviewing their previous demo last year, Spitfire Charlie seem to have moved on somewhat from merely replicating what is currently popular in the charts, casting their nets a little further influence-wise. The lineage of both tracks on this demo can be easily traced back to The Buzzcocks with maybe a little Futureheads and Bloc Party thrown in to keep it relevant. SC sound like a band that have a lot of energy, chemistry and a top quality singer to boot, which means that, even when the end result isn’t particularly original, you can’t help but enjoy them.
