About Me

Drummer/Percussionist Larry Q. Draughn Jr. has been cultivating his rhythmic concept since birth. Born into an eclectic environment, Q was introduced to a wide variety of music and information from an early age. After a successful but brief stint as an emcee, Larry decided that he wanted to pursue music wholeheartedly so he joined the band program his senior year of high school in preparation for being a music major in college. During his 5 year tenure at NCA&TSU, Larry held the principal drum chair in the jazz orchestra and combos from freshman year until graduation. As a composer, Larry is beginning to receive both local and national recognition. In April 2007, Q participated in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead residency program where he performed his original compostions on the millennium stage and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. During the same month he received first place in the A&T Student Composer's Competition. Shortly thereafter, he performed at the Steanes Institute of Jazz during the Ravinia Jazz Festival outside of Chicago again performing original music under the tutelage of Dr. Nate Smith and Dr. David Baker. Most recently, Larry was the drummer in the HBCU All-star Big Band which performed at the IAJE in Toronto and the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in Southbend, IN. In summer of 2008, Larry participated in the John Clayton Jazz Camp at Port Townsend, WA. Now with a bachelors of arts in percussion performance under his belt, and his first multimovent work finished (The Completion Suite written for Jazz Septet and voices), Larry's future is looking quite promising. Currently working in the community as both a leader and sideman, (Joe Robinson Quartet, Brian Horton, Mello B, Adair/Neese Jazz project, The Evan Olson Explosion) Larry is "in the process".
