The Works on Channel V Amp
THE WORKS is a musical collective established in 2003 with the aim of pushing the boundaries of sound and redefining the parameters of Malaysian urban music. Comprising creative talents from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, The Works is by nature unconstrained by limitations of genre, delving equally into soundscapes derived from drum ‘n’ bass, hip-hop, breakbeats and ethnic arrangements.
Although this collective is best known for its intense live performances, audiences can expect the release of an album in 2008, a production which will showcase The Works’ characteristically eclectic and innovative approach towards music.
In recent years, the group has performed alongside several critically acclaimed artists from the US and the UK. During Forces of Nature, a Yogyakarta Quake Aid benefit concert held in 2006, The Works shared the stage with FORT MINOR's DJ CHEAPSHOT. Another notable Works gig featured AMIT, a DJ/producer from the UK’s METALHEADZ label, an organization which is widely recognized as one of the pioneers of drum ‘n’ bass music.
In addition to these achievements within the DJ and club circuit, The Works has also been able to establish a presence in the Malaysian rock scene. During events for FLY FM and JUNK MUSIC MAGAZINE, The Works appeared alongside popular acts such as Love Me Butch and Malokai Gruv.
The Works’ willingness to experiment with different genres of music has also attracted the attention of the Malaysian arts community. The group has performed at various showcases for establishments such as the arts gallery Galleriiizu, as well as the Multimedia University (MMU). In 2007, the Works was also requested to perform during a book launch for a contemporary artist known as Ise, winner of the Australian High Commission’s Visual Arts Residency Award.
Other organizations such as NIKE have also shown an interest in The Works, as the group were invited to take the stage during an Air Force One launch. Furthermore, in December of 2007, The Works is scheduled to appear with the UK’s CHARLIE DARK and MORGAN ZARATE, for an event which will be organized by the BRITISH COUNCIL in Malaysia.
THE WORKS is made up of the following collaborators:
CODY has been at the forefront of the Malaysian drum ‘n’ bass community for the past decade. Beginning in his native Ipoh in 1997, Cody has gone on to produce drum ‘n’ bass compositions for local music stalwarts DJ Acid and DJ Lo of the Loops Collective and The Rebel Scum, and has crafted sound design projects for feature films, television dramas and corporate videos. His body of work culminated in his being mentioned by world-renowned urban music publication Knowledge Magazine in 2005 as one of the pioneers of Malaysian drum ‘n’ bass.

MAC began his foray into drum ‘n’ bass/breakbeat live mixing at the age of 17, and he hasn’t looked back since. One of the most vigourous giggers in the Malaysian urban music scene, Mac has performed throughout the region, having had massive responses from audiences in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand. But Kuala Lumpur remains his stomping ground, and it is with no exaggeration that Mac is known all over as the Klang Valley’s most prolific and most approachable drum ‘n’ bass DJ.

CLIQ does not let his youth get the better of him, displaying as he does a maturity of thought in his body of work and his musical direction. By age 17 he was already collaborating with KL d’n’b heavyweights Spacebar Collective at Elevation Genting, and has worked extensively with the Loops Collective and Beatmonkey, as well as showcasing his turntablism skills for numerous hip hop events. Due to his impressive progressions in scratch DJing, in 2005 Cliq was recruited by local underground hip-hop crew The Rebel Scum, and his musical career looks set to take itself to more exciting plateaus.

WORDSMANIFEST has been involved in hip-hop emceeing since 1998, first with underground street legends The Sicksiderz, then moving on to co-found the Teh Tarik Crew, and finally setting up current independent favourites The Rebel Scum, of which he is still a member. Apart from the hip-hop community, WordsManifest has also contributed his distinct lyricism to the Spacebar Collective and hard-rock outfit Dakooty Roaches. Words moonlights as a freelance photographer, graphic designer, copywriter and videographer.

FIGURE OF SPEECH is a hip-hop and drum 'n' bass emcee whose rhyme style is characterised by politically charged lyrics and unorthodox flows. As the newest member of The Works crew, Speech aims to use his underground hip-hop sensibilities to change the ways in which a drum 'n' bass emcee is commonly viewed. Speech is currently working on a solo project, which will feature production from Cliq and other members of the Malaysian hip-hop and drum 'n' bass community.
