About Me

After experiencing success producing for Foxy Brown and Fabolous, L.Z.'s career died. Now God has resurrected him as an artist, LaZaRuS. LaZaRuS is aLive!!!
The year was 2004. His career was on the rise, but his soul was at stake. LaZaRuS was in the midst of a blossoming career as a record producer, producing under the moniker “L.Z.”. He had crafted the track for the breakout single “Stylin’,” by Foxy Brown, which ended up on the Billboard Top 100 Singles chart before label politics left the project shelved. This work led to vaious opportunities to produce tracks for other hip-hop stars, including Fabolous, DJ Clue, Rah Digga, and Grafh. Upon receiving his first substantial royalty check, LaZaRuS quickly relocated to New York City to maximize his opportunities. Slowly but surely, the money had begun rolling in and LaZaRuS’ pursuit of it led him into the “rockstar lifestyle.” On the brink of breaking into stardom as a record producer, God stepped in and stripped it all away. All he was left with was God.
Born Laban Z. Reeves, II in Harbel, Liberia to an American mother and Liberian father, LaZaRuS’ family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida at the tender age of five. Throughout his childhood years, LaZaRuS developed a deeply rooted love for hip-hop, and upon hearing the message of salvation, a love for God. At the age of 17, he left Florida to attend Purdue University and never turned back. While studying engineering, he began making beats and recording with local acts in his spare time. Upon graduating from Purdue with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, LaZaRuS was recruited to work for the consumer products giant, P&G, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Amazingly, a $57,000 per year salary and intercontinental travel on an American Express Corporate Card was not enough to keep him happy. In 2001, after a year and a half stint in corporate America, LaZaRuS took a leap of faith from his day job to pursue a career in the music industry under the mentorship of a then obscure Kanye West. Four years later, after a brief taste of success, the single father found himself without money and without a roof over his head. It was at this point that LaZaRuS FULLY surrendered his life to the Lord and died to his selfish pursuit of wealth and stardom. Upon surrendering, he received a vision of what was to come.
Fast-forward to today. LaZaRuS is now an artist and producer. No longer willing to compromise his love of God for the explicit messages that permeate hip-hop, he now makes music with a purpose. LaZaRuS wants to inspire listeners to find their God-given purpose and wholeheartedly pursue God to achieve it. LaZaRuS’ debut album, The Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, is a blend of the old and the new; beats that helped him to succeed in the music industry and lyrics that are rooted in his walk.
