Underground hip hop/rap is the new punk; it’s artists vilified and feared by the establishment yet held dear by the nation’s youth. Under his moniker of Raffo Dan Filer hilariously, painfully and inch-perfectly pieces together rhymes against a hand-crafted UK garage backdrop. Filer has the ability to articulate the very essence of UK urban existence in the twenty-first century, from clumsy relationship fumblings, through social services living to the joys and otherwise of alcohol and drugs. Like his eighties forebears Filer spans entire tracts of contemporary life and uses music to underscore his points and punchlines. Moreover, what makes this album even more remarkable is that it is the work of a one unassuming 20 year old, Dan Filer. He drops his own beats of inner city rap quality, and when their combined with his vocal delivery the results are mesmerizing. Its not quite hip hop, not quite an MC and not rap, but he is somewhere very securely in between. This guy is ready, willing, very much able and enlightened not to mention the fact that he writes with a degree of insight that is humorous, heart-wrenching, humbling and worthy of so much more than this little review.By his own admission he is planning to go to the top yet amongst the bitter sweet, inner city anecdotes of drugs, violence, and MC-ing, Raffo’s best punches are pulled when he is at his most offensive. In "This Crazy World" he muses "this crazy world shows no remorse, this crazy world gave me just one choice. This crazy world said 9-5 or use your voice. Lyrics like this show us just how deep Raffos music goes, and how these words are really his own. More of these gems are revealed with successive listens and it is clear as the title in "Superman" that Raffo doesnt mind stepping on other MCs toes.In the years to come if you’re ever asked what it was like being young at the start of the twenty first century you could do a lot worse than dig this guys tracks out, of course, if you’ve taken it out of your CD player. Genius.
