Bear Bryant was one of the greatest college football coaches to ever to stand on the sidelines. He was born on September 11, 1913 in Moro Bottoms, Arkansas. He played college football at Alabama from 1933 to 1935 where he led them to 2 SEC championships and 1 National Championship. He served in the Navy from 1942 to 1944 in North Africa after hearing news of Pearl Harbor. In 1945 he started his coaching career at the University of Maryland. Then in 1946 he accepted the head coaching job at Kentucky and while there he led them to there only SEC championship. In 1953 he accepted the head coacing job at Texas A&M. In 1954 he held the famous preseason in Junction, TX. Then in 1957 "mama called" ,and the Bryant Era began in Alabama.
In 1961 Bryant won his first National Championship at Alabama with a 10-3 victory over Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl. He went on to win 5 more Championships in 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, and his final in 1979. On December 15, 1982 Bryant announced his retirement and coached his final game on December 29, 1982 with a 21-15 win over Illinois in the Liberty Bowl. Just 28 days later on January 26 Bryant died in a Druid City Hospital.
