welcome to the subculture virtual space.
subculture is a dubstep-orientated, loose collective of dj's, producers and associated artists. we hope to showcase the most original and innovative artists in the genre and try to push the boundaries of what people expect from a 'dubstep night'. through experimentation, musical forms are revitalized and dubstep is no different. we are seeing the beginning of a cycle in the music. the same artists play everywhere and innovation is ignored.
if you're unsure, dubstep is a derivative of garage which was strongly influenced by drum 'n bass, dub and electronica. it is a common misconception that dubstep sprung from grime, infact, dubstep preceded grime by several years. the music is characterised by sparse and awkward yet complex rhythms, punishing sub-bass wobbles and a cold, reverb driven aesthetic. unlike many dance music genre's, dubstep is not defined by a certain rhythmic pattern or sound, such as house's 'four to the floor' or jungle's amen mash-ups. the beats can be fast and bouncy or slow and precise, in a variety of different time signatures and structures. it is this that creates such potential in the genre; extremely distinctive and different artists find themselves held together by a common theme; bass.
