I was "Made in Africa" without a single bit of musical talent
I was born and raised in S. Africa and from a very young age, had a huge love and passion for Africa's wildlife and wilderness.
Africa! she is like a jealous b1tch, once you get to know her and she loves you back, she never lets you go...
As a young lad in the city, I raised a spotted eagle owl, jackal, bat eared fox, 2 squirrels, 5 bush baby's, 3 hedgehogs, a monitor lizard, leopard twins and had over 200 snakes at any one time in my bedroom (a converted 2 car garage).
I worked and sold snake venom to the medical institute, to be able to feed and maintain this whole menagerie. Do not ask what my parents thought about all this :-) all I know today is that I think I helped age them somewhat.
I have been bitten twice by poisonous snakes and landed up both times in a coma and in the one incident, experiencing an outer body experience- what a trip.
By profession, I was a Game Ranger for 17 years, in one of Africa's largest National Parks
This was my biggest dream, since before I was born, and I got to live it!!!
For 7 of these years, I specialized in anti-poaching opeations also doing a lot of under-cover work, many times posing as an ivory trader in sting operations.
It was not long after starting anti-poaching work that the pochers started to focus more on elephant and rhino because of the prize that tusks and horn brought.
As with this focus change, did the poachers also evolve from using snares to using firearms of all descriptions including automatic rifles and most contacts resulted in instant gunfights ending with some walking away and others not. I never lost a single field ranger (a few were wounded) and I guess I am still here :-) but it was tough and intense at times (though the adrenaline was good).
With help from IBM, I started the first ever high profile anti-poaching data base
Over the years I also raised a spotted hyena, cape buffalo and honey badger (their stories are for another day), fought many bush fires, with great difficulty culled more bufflao, hippo and elephant than I care to remember, fell in/out of love, celebrated many of Africa's best sunrises and sunsets, cried tears of rage, laughed so hard just because I was still alive, witnessed senseless death, saved a few from the same, battled three bouts of malaria, was bitten by a rabid dog, caught impala antelope by hand at night, partied like there is no tomorrow, got my own unique virus that tried so very hard to kill me. that put me in my 3rd coma and (2nd outer body trip) and last but not least, was named after me,
Oh yea, I have also been chased and charged by a variety of animal kinds :-) ...ok, that is enough for now, more on another day.
I have travelled to many countries in Africa and elsewhere and have been to some of the remotest/wildest/crazy places imaginable. I should write a book about my experiences and adventures through my life's journey, but do not have the talent to do so.
Of all I have told you about my life, my two lads, Zane and Anders, have been my greatest adventure and journey ever and I have a HUGE love for them as they have been my inspiration and my life.
They were both born while I was still in the National Parks service, and got to experience part of that life.
They have also taught me so much about life and myself and even today, this relationship we have still grows - yes, I raised them myself!
I am amply vain enough to say with ease, that am the best dad on the face of this frigging planet.
Zane lad, Anders lad, I salute you both, you are my Hero's
I am here on Myspace, to help promote the lad's band, LAD (see link below) and to meet some cool people.
Today I do Wildlife Consulting on the side and own my own business bringing safari gear to the USA and other countries. For now, let this say the rest for me:
"If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up WAY TOO MUCH SPACE!"
"Live as if every day were the last day of your life"
"Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt, and dance like nobody's watching"
"LIFE - its sexually transmitted and always fatal"
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines - Sail away from the safe harbor - Catch the trade winds in your sails - Explore - Dream - Discover!!"
For the LADS
Finally, I would like to remember a few good friends who are now in the 'Happy Hunting Grounds':
Sam - Killed by a jumbo while trying to save his girlfriend
Carol, Johnny & Buck (the pup) - All killed in front of me by lightning
Andy - I am sure he wished a jumbo had rather killed him
