Where you from what are you about?105 West: We’re all from different cities, I’m actually holding down LA right now, 105 West. My boy Rue is from Compton.RU: Hub City.9 TA 5: Catch me in Bellflower.BSAM: Nice, he said Bellflower…105 WEST: Yea, we gotta put Bellflower on the map.RU: Now don’t get it twisted man, now when you hear Bellflower you might think the frilly city but really you live in Bellflower it’s low key to the hood, Compton, Watts everybody moves to Bellflower it’s with the business, we live out there too.BSAM: Ok, that’s what’s up, Hustle $ Grind is on the rise. What do you see in your future? Ok, signing a big deal, getting on a label, then what?105 West: Really, right now what we’re searching for in the near future is really some distribution promotion from a major. That will really take us to the next level. Because we‘re already feeling we have the music we have the producer and right now we just need the broadcasting.BSAM: You’ve got the stage presence as well, I think so.105 WEST: Most definitely, you can check out our performance and you go ahead and judge for yourself.RU: Yea, it’s basically all about chemistry, we have chemistry, we’re not a rap group, these are my brothers.BSAM: How long have you all known each other?9 TA 5: We’ve known each other since 8th grade.105 WEST: But we’ve been doing this music for about 6 or 7 years.BSAM: So, none of you are related you’re just homey’s that just started…RU: Just homey’s that clicked up and we created Hustle $ Grind.9 TA 5: We’re a family, that’s what it is, say it again. (Laughing)BSAM: So you’re a family, where do you get your inspiration?105 WEST: I think we all grew up listening to Hip Hop, we all have our own idols. We’re loving the way the West is going right now, we just feel like they need to be shown and marketed in a different way besides go wide and tide, but we can do that too, it’s just the fact that I feel like we need to show the new West, which is us right now. We know Snoop, we know Cube, we know Dre, now it’s time for Hustle $ Grind.RU: So, we think we bring our own stamp, later on in the future probably 15 years from now we want other artist to say “my inspiration was Hustle $ Grind”. So, that’s our goal.BSAM: Have you guys opened up for anybody yet? How many shows have you done?105 WEST: We’ve done over about 60-70 shows. Most of the time when we’re opening up, we’re headlining.RU: If God blesses us in the right way, we’ll end up opening for 50 or Wayne, because guess what, it’s coming!BSAM: Nice, yea, you are doing exactly what the name says…Hustle $ Grind.9 TA 5: I’m inspired by a lot of underground artist, seriously, I like people that’s underground they do it for free, that keeps me motivated people that do it for free… for the love.BSAM: But you got to grind, money makes the world go round. So even on that, what do you think about the guys that made it… do you think they help out enough, here on the West Coast, because there’s a lot of underground rappers here that’s not getting any time.9 TA 5: There’s a lot of underground rappers, but like my boy RU was saying, there’s a lot that don’t help out and give back.105 WEST: We don’t have enough community functions out here.9 TA 5: We need a lot more community functions, unity.105 WEST: It would be different if we had more community functions, because if I see you on the streets and I’ve seen your face I would say he looks familiar I know this cat, he isn’t with that drama. Like the South , they’re more connected, they don’t mind putting the next person on. On the West Coast everybody is about themselves and about their money. So, right now we just need to get the community going, like have an annual basketball tournament, have the music the food and have a good atmosphere.9 TA 5: Yea, then everybody could know everybody out here in the West.BSAM: So what do you guys think about doing school shows?RU: I would love to go to the schools and talk to the youth, especially troubled teens, because I used to be a troubled teen myself. There is nothing better than just giving back, honestly, I don’t even need to get paid just set up the stage and a mic and let me go on a college tour or high school tour.BSAM: Those are your fans, that’s who you want to work with.RU: Yea, what makes us so different though is all of us giving. You see some people are stingy, I see some artist and say what’s up and they think they’re famous and just like brush us off, but they don’t realize that we are buying their album…how are you treating me like that? That’s the good thing about us, that we are giving, we’re humble and we have done a couple of tracks for other artist and never ask for not a dime. So, that’s what separates us from other groups out there.BSAM: It’s a lot of artist that’s done that for other people, that’s how Xzibit got on by doing a favor for Dre and he blew up from there. So you never know what’s your calling out, when and how you’re going to blow up in this business. Because you meet people and one thing leads to another, maybe it might work and maybe it won’t, but don’t give up. Just keep moving forward.105 WEST: Especially in this industry in this game, because if you’re the type that thinks I’m going to do this one song and I’m going to be on, you’re not going to make it because there is a lot that you have to learn in just this business alone, before you even get to the music.RU: First thing, get that I out of your head and put WE in it, a team.105 WEST: (Laughing) Yea, even if you’re a solo artist you still have producers working with you, you have management you’re still going to be part of a team.9 TA 5: It’s still like a dream come true, every time I get on stage I feel like I’m living my dream. That’s how I feel, that’s why I’m blessed to be around my group because we all have the same dream and dreams really do come true.RU: We come from the people writing in garages. We lived in a car, how many times, sleeping in a car and in a garage writing songs. We’re stepping up step by step so that’s why it’s always a blessing. We went from doing shows in the backyard of a house to actually getting on stage to messing with King Ryan to messing with Access. It don’t get no better than that.105 WEST: Yeah, Backstage Access coverage.BSAM: Most definitely, look I like you, I would come and interview in the garage. (Laughing)9 TA 5: I would like to give a shout out to Groove-A-Lot, Productions, manager Mike.RU: What up Mike?105 WEST: Will Kool .BSAM: Your studio….H$G: Oh yeah! Black Hole Productions, nothing like it.9 TA 5: If you look on the wall, you see the wall of fame.BSAM: Now, you guys have a show coming up, let’s talk a little bit about that, that’s kind of big at the Aqua Lounge, Beverly Hills, that’s big.105 WEST: Yeah, they call us Playboys of the year, we’re loving it, we’re going real playboyish right now. Check us out at the Aqua Lounge.BSAM: So how many songs do you think you all have written since you’ve been a group?RU: We have mixed tapes we haven’t even put out.105 WEST: Mixed tapes that can be an album…(laughing).BSAM: So, some of that might end up being on your album?RU: That could happen, we got Lil J on some of them too…shout out to J, what up boy?BSAM: Do you all have a website?9 TA 5: Yeah on my space, you can check it out at myspace.com/hgent08 and myspace.com/ruhgent.BSAM: So you guys say you have written a lot of songs.RU: If we named all the songs we wrote, we would be here all day and night. We have rock songs, we have club songs, we have love making songs, we have hood songs we have the whole nine.105 WEST: You don’t feel gangster 24 hours a day and you don’t feel like you’re in love 24 hours a day so it’s what you feel.9 TA 5: I would like to say, right now there’s 3 of us but we are actually missing a group member, Mark Anthony, he’s a part of the group.BSAM: Shout out to Mark Anthony, anybody else you guys want to give a shout out to?RU: Yeah, we want to give a shout out to our family’s our Moms, Pops brothers, uncles all of the above. All family in the circle, we love you. Most ups to all our fans in Bellflower, LA, Compton, people that come to our shows, much shout out to you all!105 WEST: Most of all to God above, without him none of us would be here and none of this would be possible. Right now I feel like if you’re an underground artist or if you are an artist already mainstream. I feel that you should give your thanks to God above, right now that’s where it’s at.BSAM: That’s right, we have to give a shout out to my boy Ryan, he’s giving back to the community, he’s making it possible for the new artist.H$G: Ryan, he already knows he has much love here! He’s amazing, if you don’t know him, get to know him. King Ryan.BSAM: That’s what’s up, this is Backstage Access Magazine this is Hustle $ Grind. We’re Out! Edited by Zenobia Jackson
