Vancouver Symphony Orchestra

About Me

Founded in 1919, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) performs to an annual audience attendance of over 200,000 people and features more than 50 celebrated guest artists each season in 140 concerts. It is the premiere orchestral experience in Western Canada. The Orpheum Theatre, a gorgeous venue in the heart of downtown Vancouver, is home to the VSO. Playing virtually every weekend from October through June, the VSO delivers beautiful music that everyone can appreciate, in various venues throughout the Lower Mainland, including venues in Burnaby, Delta, Maple Ridge, North Van, Port Coquitlam, Surrey, Vancouver and West Van.

From the deepest traditions of baroque and classical repertoire, to huge choral presentations, jazzy Pops concerts, and even their hilariously entertaining "Kids Koncerts" matinees, the Vancouver Symphony provides the most dazzling live concert experience in Vancouver week after week!
Innovators in the orchestral community, the VSO broke new ground in orchestral performances by becoming the first orchestra in Canada to use video screens in a full classical concert series. These screens enhance the concert presentation through live close-ups of all the action on stage, including those otherwise hard to see moments of sheer artistic genius conjured up by the guest artists and orchestra members themselves; never miss seeing flying fingers on a keyboard again!
The VSO won both the 2008 Grammy and Juno Awards for their collaboration with violinist James Ehnes. The VSOs impressive discography includes recordings with artists such as Jann Arden, Steven Stryk, Spirit of the West, Rita MacNeil, John McDermott and James Ehnes.
VSO Music Director, Maestro Bramwell Tovey is the consummate ambassador for music; his extraordinary artistic leadership and remarkable ability to relate to people on all levels, combined with passionate advocacy for music education, makes him an ideal Music Director for an orchestra in the 21st Century.
