About Me

Pink Froot play....

passionate songs/poetry of desire, innocence, love, death, obsession, chosen for powerful lyrics and haunting melodies, taken from traditional/contemporary folk, or written from the heart - plus some rocking instrumentals to liven things up. We particularly like to explore the darker side.......Now we are six.
We welcome Panda, our new fiddle player, who fills the final hole in a stonking folk outfit. Playing harmonies to Ann's devilish flute playing or undercurrents of texture to emphasise the emotion of our most souldful songs, Panda's playing touches the heart.
Esther Jaye has been with us a while now, our set has been torn apart and rebuilt, some new stuff, the very best of the old, some songs written by us. A song cycle from 14th Century Spain.
Our goal now is to play live. now we have had the space to reflect and refine our material.
Our last major gig supporting respected folk icons Flook was a great success. Such a good place for a break.
2009 looks like being a great year for Pink Froot. Already things are afoot and afinger, rehearsals booked, contacts made.
Pink Froot took time out in 2008 to enlist new members Ann Ballinger on flute and Chris Morgan on bodhran. After spending lots of time in the practice studio working hard we have incorporated this exciting new energy into a longer, more varied set. This includes some lively instrumentals to offset and complement the slower songs.
We're very pleased with the result, and we hope you enjoy Pink Froot's new fuller richer sound here and at our live gigs.
And a big thank you to Mike D for his help with the layout

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: www.pinkfroot.co.uk
Band Members:

Pink Froot are:

Esther Jaye (vocals), Chris Pink (guitar), Ann Ballinger (flute), Julia Dawson (bass), Chris Morgan (percussion) and Panda Rainbow (fiddle).
Esther Jaye: the new Froot singer, wow, what can we say, powerful, emotive with oodles of charisma and stage presence.
Ann Ballinger (formerly of Irish band Magog) on Flute and Vocals. To be found in many haunts of traditional music in Bristol, most notably as leader of the Irish session at the Scotchman and His Pack on Tuesday nights - get along there, you won't find a finer bunch of session tune players this side of the Irish sea.
Chris Pink: long a solo guitarist, plays intricate picking guitar with drive and passion. Sound engineer, stage manager, the powerhouse of Pink Froot. Also seen out and about as the guitarist with live soundtrack artists ARCC .

Julia Dawson: survivor of the inspirational Bristol Jazz Workshops and player of fretless electric bass for over 10 years, after graduating from classical guitar. Raised on an eclectic mix of musical influences, such as Soft Machine, Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, and more recently Radio 3 Late Junction. Played in local jazz/swing, world and folk music bands. Occasionally dips back into fancy finger-pickin’.
Chris Morgan plays Bodhran and contributes backing vocals. Rhythmic mainstay of soundtrack band ARCC (www.cinemascape.org.uk) Chris is also a keen student of traditional forms and will also be found at the Scotchman sessions. He is in the process of starting up and Eastern European session in Bath in Spring 2009. If you have an interest in this kind of music please get in touch with us and we'll keep you posted.
Influences: Our first singer Sue Tayler wrote;
Capercaillie, Steeleye Span, Sandy Denny, June Tabor, Catherine Ann MacPhee, Maggie MacInnes, The Bothy Band, Cocteau Twins, Tim Buckley, Nick Cave. The Beatles....and myriad singers throughout these islands - well-known, lesser-known, unknown - who've touched our souls.
Which, when I come to edit it, do not know where to start. Our influences, and so what we all bring to the mighty Froot, are just so diverse as to make a list like this meaningless. Between us we play, and thus listen to, a huge range of genres and so I will leave Sue's list to stand as founding influences of Pink Froot.
And her last line is still so true.
Sounds Like: fun
