DJ JAMMA PROFILE
'I'll keep this short, as long winded profiles don't always go down to well' Jamma got into music at an early age, playing drums, bongos and steel pans all through his younger years. He then made a wrong turn and started MC'ing (thinking he was good) on the underground party scene, known as 'Squat Parties'. In 1997 he got more into the DJ side of things, playing at a few radio stations along the way: Kool FM, Ruud Awakening, Rage FM, Non-Stop FM, www.ukrumble.com, www.bassdrive.com, www.londonliveanddirect.com and nuff more (too many to mention). In 2000 'Unsocial Audio Recordings' was started by Running Man, by this time, Jamma and Running Man had played at countless illegal raves and club nights. Jamma has now started a ‘Digital Music Label’ called ‘DIGITAL RAGE MUSIC’ (see http://www.myspace.com/digitalragemusic for more info) & is now making his way through the ranks as a solo artist, collaborator and DJ... There's loads more to come from this guy... Watch this space!!!!
THE SOURCE PROFILE
The Source got into music from an early age of 14, being brought up in the traditional West Indian manner and lifestyles, where reggae was a big influence. As time passed, trend and music evolved, he then took an interest in Hardcore/Jungle techno with the aid of the old DJ Noodles mix tapes.
At 16 he started to compile his own music with the help from the much known Commodore Amiga 64 but this didn’t go well as the programme couldn’t handle the heavy bass lines that he is now known for. At 17 The Source decided to invest in his much loved turntables and vinyl, and then before he knew it, he was playing at parties and get-togethers under the name DJ Spyda. Completing a sound engineering course at college enabled him to get a job in a recording studio enhancing his skills and giving him hands on experience.
After 11 years of playing at countless amounts of clubs and events, he held his own event and with a lot of help from various artists in the D&B scene, his style of ‘Liquid Dance floor’ is becoming a success.
The Source DJ/Producer/Promoter… What’s next???
RADIUM PROFILE
Radium first started to listen to dance music through old acid house tapes passed on from his sisters. Hearing classics such as Can you Feel it by Mr Fingers and Let the music by Night Writers created an interest in the hypnotic groves and simple drum arrangements which in turn lay a foundation for his interest in the emerging hardcore scene.
The next step was a trip to Soho’s Black Market and Unity record shops, this was an introduction to labels such as Lucky Spin, Reinforced, Slamming Vinyl, Awesome, F-Project, Production House, Soap bar and Boogie Time to name a few. Not to mention the countless white label’s which gave the scene a unique edge. After 5 choice buys the records were spun on an old record player owned by DJ Running Man, this was the beginning of years of weekends in Croydon’s Wax City and late nights mixing sessions dropping the fiercest hardcore, dark side, jungle, drum and bass dubs.
Inevitably appearances were made on local pirates and small gigs played around Brixton not to mention the house party’s and anywhere really a turntable could be Hi-jacked. Quite often Radium would drop the more experimental beats of Metalheadz, V and Renegade Hardware labels, which lead to his passion for the hardstep sound.
The Bluenote was a major influence on the experimentation and creativity in beats, which Radium tries to achieve. The Metalheadz Sunday sessions opened the possibilities of Drum and Bass with Grooverider always being a favourite playing tunes that at the time were jaw dropping.
Intelligent drum and bass was the next step where Radium began to mellow his tastes and listen to the more intricate and sometimes relaxed sounds of Good Looking and Moving Shadow. At about this time friends started to by audio equipment and more powerful computers, the desire to create his own unique style of drum and bass spawned a thirst for music production.
Radium has been creating beats and tunes with an underground crew of producers who are finally making their name on the digital rage label. Watch out for him and fellow producers on this new D&B venture.
DJ SET SPEED PROFILE
Music is my life, my name is DJ Set Speed and I am 25. If u r wondering where I got the name Set Speed from, my good friend Neutrino gave it to me. He heard me playing and thought I was quick at putting my mixes together.
I started mixing about 10 years ago, back in 1994 when I was 13. My main influence was my older brother who was producing and mixing hip-hop back in the late 80s and early nineties. He was a member of group HIJACK was signed to music of life records before being scooped up by ICE-T’s s ’Syndicate’ label in the states, releasing two albums.
Seeing all this made me want to do the same. I got some cheap decks and started to learn how to mix, back then I was into Hardcore, Ragga and Rap.
Before I had a chance to build up a large stack of vinyl, I was introduced to a new type of music, JUNGLE!! A family friend DJ WANGER, who now plays on KOOL FM, put it to me. This was the first station I heard playing most of those dope beats. Listening to guys like ANDY BAD BOY C, NICKY-BLACK-MARKET, BROCKIE, DJ RON, PRESSURE X, MAMPI SWIFT, RANDALL, DARREN J, and MICKY FINN also influenced me. FIRST LITTLE BREAKS FOR ME!!
I first started play on a legal youth station called FUNDAMENTAL FM. The station comes on air once a year throughout the summer holidays and is a scheme put together by WANDSWORTH COUNCIL. I then went on to play for a station called FLEX FM, where I did my DJ thing a couple of times! Not long after this was asked to come and do a set on SUPREME FM this was from 1996 to 1999. I met a lot people there like: ROC STEADY CREW, SOVEREIGN, SO SOLID, MC NIKEY, MC MILLIE, NIK NAK, and LITTLE JOE. You may have noticed that most of these guys are on the Garage scene. SUPREME FM was about garage music, so I decided to sit down with management and ask if JUNGLE could be pushed more on the station. It worked!! I was given the chance to organize a day and see how I could run tings!! I recruited some DJ’s and MC’s that I knew, and management also brought other DJ’s to me. One of the guys who was brought to me was a familiar face from FLEX FM, MC CHEEKO. Jungle drum bass were part of the station now.
After a while things weren’t going to well for the station. I then decided to get into studio work. (CROSSFIRE PROMOTIONS) !! I stayed in contact with MC Cheeko who introduced me to his DJ ATMOSPHERE, who has be come a very good friend. These talented two were in a group called knockout crew; I also knew some of the other members. Some time later I was asked to join them. The group was renamed and we are now called ‘CRIMINAL JUSTICE’.
Down the lines I was linked up by MC KILLER D, another of the C.J Crew, with some guy called RAZ who was having trouble filling his set on www.ukrumble.com an internet dance station. Killer was asked to find a replacement for him; the chance was thrown my way!! I am still playing set on Rumble, on the each and every Thursday from 9pm till 10.30pm.
EXPERIENCE PLAY OUT IN DIFFERENT VENUES LIKE:
EDUCATION @ GEORGE THE IV, HOBGOBLIN, HALF MOON, & RECLAMATION @ THE TELEGRAPH, DOG STAR EDUCATION 5TH BIRTHDAY (HOSTED BY RECLAMATION & INFINATE RECORDS BRIGHTON BIP UP MELO D OR T PASSING MY DEMO ON TO TS!), THE PLUG, WKD, CHUNNEL CLUB, PENTHOUSE NIGHTCLUB, OCEAN ROOMS, SANCTUARY, BN1 CLUB BAGLEYS AND HACKNEY CENTRAL.
During these times I have met up with and become good friends with a club owner who has given me the chance to play at PURE SCIENCE AND HEAT. (HAVE TO BIG UP JIM) One dream place to play for me would be at a WORLD DANCE at DOCKLANDS, and FABRICS IN FARRINGDON maybe even a spot out in NEW YORK!!
Looking at favourite DJ’s, I don’t have one at the moment as they are as good as each other! MC wise, I like SKIBADEE, SHADDA, DET, BASSMAN, FEARLESS, FUN, FOXY, IC3, GQ AND RAGE. (TO MANY NAMES TO MENTION)
I am now playing on Kool FM 94.6 each and every Saturday 7 till 9am.
I would like to continue working in the industry and continue playing music. My ambitions are to eventually get into production; producing and managing other artists, owning my own record label, and making videos. Well, that’s my lot, that’s me DJ Set Speed. I hope you liked what u read!!
I would like to acknowledge some of those who have traveled along with me on this ride and had faith: BLACKER D, CLIVE AKA MIZZY, COLOSSUS, MC CRYSTAL, DIZZY D (FROM DAY ONE) MY BRO CAPRI, TUT PROMOTIONS, RED BRICK CREW, TINKER, TRAE LA DEE, SKULLY P, FIZZER B, and not forgetting my two sons! FULLA-D PROFILE
Fulla-D started his D&B beginnings at the age of 14 using his humble Amiga 500, producing simple Hardcore and Jungle tracks using just 4 channels and 8-Bit samples. The Amiga was his musical tool for the next 6 years, linking up with other well known producers like DJ Ren, Mickey Finn, Bizzy B and Shy FX who all had experience using the Amiga platform, which helped him develop his style and skills in production. At the age of 18 he began DJing which is a logical step forward in this game. He named himself Da Hitman, and would start every DJ set with the then anthem The Hitman by Cutty Ranks, and believe me he played that Bloody Jungle Music ALL NIGHT!!!
He managed to get bookings for clubs and was always in demand for all the house party’s across South London.
The highlight for him back then was getting his first Dub Plate cut at the age of 19, he says “I remember walking out of JTS in Hackney with this 10 inch Dub Plate stinking of acetate, in that famous mustard colour sleeve thinking I’m the dogs bollocks! What made it better was the fact it had JTS on the label which just happened to be the initials of my name. Very proud moment for myself indeed”.
Spending hours and years perfecting his mixing finally paid off when he became self-employed as a DJ Tutor, producing and teaching his very own branded successful DJ Workshops courses.
During this time he was also running the studio (Manic Compression) and putting himself through college doing Sound Engineering & Music Tech courses.
He crossed over into other genres, experimenting with 2-step Garage and Break Beat which got him his first regular radio shows playing that kind of music. But Fulla couldn’t escape from his first love and decided to head back into his beloved D&B again.
He now has his own unique style and sound starting to take shape in the studio. Also he is on the verge of finishing the work required for his label, Pad-L©k Recordings.
Fulla says “After dedicating 17 years to the scene I feel I’ve gained enough to finally push forward. The idea of the label Pad-L©k Recordings has been there since 1998, but I needed all this time to make sure everything and everyone is in place. The label is a vehicle for myself and a few close friends to reach the next level of the journey. I’m aiming to tear up dance floors with a couple of tracks I’m working on as we speak, watch this space!”
