Invincible: B "the kind of movie you can't help but like..."
Invincible is the kind of movie you can't help but like. It's the off-the-field-to-on-the field story of Vincent Papale who at age 30 walked on to become a professional football player with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gritty scenes of Philly's south side set the backdrop for the story with Papale as a part-time teacher and bartender struggling to make ends meet. He loses his teaching job, his wife leaves him but his friends stand firm as many of them are in the same boat with their own dire economic circumstances. They rally around the Eagles even though the Eagles repeatedly disappoint on the field.
The arrival of new head coach Dick Vermeil brings renewed hope and enthusiasm for the Eagles. In a brilliant move to generate media interest and create a buzz for the Eagles, Vermeil offers open tryouts to hundreds of Eagle hopefuls who are just regular Joe's from Philadelphia. Papale is selected to tryout and eventually makes the team with support from his friends, help from a budding relationship with a new girl, and the drive and determination brought about from his ex-wife's last message that he will never amount to anything. Mark Wahlberg is right on as Papale and in his trademark low key fashion manages to generate success both on and off the field despite the odds.
