About Me

From humble beginnings in Melbourne’s inner north, Stephen Gori is a DJ and producer whose determination and talent speaks volumes about his survival in such a fickle industry as music. At a mere 30 years old, he is still reaching new heights of success doing something he could only have dreamed about as a teenager – carving a career out of doing what he loves most.
It was at the age of 16 when a friend was having a birthday party with no DJ organised, that by volunteering to take on the required duty Stephen was locked in for his very first gig. His passion for music and thrill for seeing people “get down” saw him spinning vinyl on a weekly basis as a mobile DJ; either at birthday parties or often running under-age events (when he was under-age himself!). At 16, most kids have their first job cooking burgers, but Stephen was busy cooking a set of 1200’s.
Finding himself with a deep respect for Hip Hop & Rap groups like Public Enemy & N.W.A while dabbling into mid 90's Dance music, it was at this time that Stephen Gori began to broaden his musical style and explore the potential of audio production. As an upcoming DJ, Stephen flirted with many styles of music and 1996 saw dance & electronica as his forte style. Deciding to team up with two friends in 1998, Stephen and his buddies got their hands on a Roland 505 and gave production a go. After 6 months his friends opted out and Stephen’s decision was easy. He gathered the paperwork and took home the 505 where it still resides today.
Without a complete set of tools, any musical training or a mentor, being self-taught in all aspects of composing, computer mastery & audio production meant learning was always going to be done the long hard way for Stephen. And learn well he did.
His insatiable appetite for music rewarded him with spots DJing across Melbourne venues and working on numerous radio shows. By 2004 Stephen tested the waters with a track he had written called “So So Disco”. It was played in-store at Rhythm & Soul Records where Redsand, who was to become the other half of Playrock worked. A collaboration between the two resulted in a record deal through Vicious Vinyl. Mid 2004 saw this debut single make its way to 16 on the ARIA Club Chart and featured on various compilations around the world. Numerous remixes as well as a second release “Come On Girl” followed.
After an amicable split with Redsand, Stephen threw himself once again into the studio. Working on the Ike and Tina Turner remixes, Andy J’s “I will have you”, JCA’S “Someday” and his debut solo release “Goodbye”. The best is yet to come with a second release titled “Don’t you want my love” creating quite a buzz at the Vicious office, a tight remix for Pitch Dark, and an album of original material on standby. In the meantime you can check out his work on Beatport, Juno, DJ Download & iTunes.
Stephen understands the value of good timing and has put in the groundwork over the past 9 years for such an occasion as this.
