I've been playing bass for almost 30 years, ever since I switched from guitar at 15. My first band was 'Javelin', a cover band we started in grade school.
After high school, I played in several hard rock/heavy metal bands throughout the 80's. As that genre died down, I became very interested in jazz fusion, and started a fusion band with some friends. That was the best time I had playing music.
As happens with most musicians, other matters came to the forefront and I quit playing for a few years. But I've been playing again for 5 years now and I'm trying to figure out what kind of music I want to play.
I like traditional jazz (Miles, Coltrane, etc.) and have been playing the upright for 3 years. But given the demands of jazz and the upright itself, I don't know that I'll ever be able to pull that off. I was playing a kind of alternative thing for a while with The Intolerables, but that never left the recording studio. I also like old-style prog-rock and metal, but again I think my age will stand in the way of pulling that off.
A couple of members from The Intolerables put together an Americana style band called Billy Two Shoes. I'm currently working on their second CD with them, and a couple of us have taken to playing acoustic sets locally.
Occasionally, I put together little recordings (solo and with other musicians). I have given my solo project the name Bass Is Life, which you are listening to now.
I also play with the Cardinal Health Chamber Orchestra . This is my first experience playing in this type of setting and I'm really enjoying it. It's forcing me to concentrate on my upright playing as well.
