About Me

I'm Julian Chan from Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA, and I started out in the Malaysian Music scene after he graduated from his Bachelor's Degree in Accounting from Curtin Uni in Australia in mid-2000. This was also the time where I started my studies in music seriously, under the tutelage of saxophonist Greg Lyons.
I have freelanced in the KL music scene for almost 8 years now, playing with various groups and settings - jazz and non-jazz - and also formed my own bands (Happy People Quintet and the currently running BOPLICITY). Among the bands I've been part of (or had the blessing to work with include Greg Lyons' Nonet, Greg Lyons' Emergency Break Ensemble, Jose Thomas' Groove Junction, John Thomas' The Phunk Mob, The David Gomes Sextet, Vincent Ong's The Black Machine and GruvAvenue, Radio and Television Malaysia Orchestra (RTM), among others. With these bands and others I had the opportunity to play interesting music at various jazz clubs in Kuala Lumpur, various concerts from jazz, pop, rock to even different kinds of musicals, and other kinds of session work that required a saxophonist (as well as a survival flutist). In addition, I've also had the great fortune to also perform in other countries in Asia, such as Singapore, Thailand, China, and Taiwan with some of them.
Among the musicians and artists (local and foreign) I've had the blessing to work with (jazz and others) include Greg Lyons, David Gomes, Junji Delfino, Michael Veerapen, Farid Ali, Aubrey Suwito, Mac Chew, Jenny Chin, Sean Ghazi, Alonso Gonzales & Jazz Latino, Jose Thomas, Jamie Wilson, Lewis Pragasam, Ning Baizura, Dayang Nurfaizah, Sam McNally, Peter Grant, James Flynn, Sharizan, Jonathan Lee Zong Sheng (World Asia Tour), and more.
With some of these notable musicians and artistes, I have had the opportunity to also play in various festivals in Malaysia as well as overseas, including the Sunrise-Mont Kiara Jazz Festival for several years, Kuching International Jazz Festival 2004, Miri International Jazz Festival, Johor Bahru Arts Festival, Chijmes Jazz Festival (Singapore), Java Jazz Festival 2007 (with Sam McNally), Genting International Jazz Festival 2007, Penang International Jazz Festival (2005)
Julian currently resides in New York, studying for his MA in Jazz Performance in Queens College CUNY.

Band Members: Julian Chan's BOPLICITY: - BOPLICITY, a new jazz outfit formed by upcoming saxophonist, Julian Chan, brings bop music into the Malaysian music fold, when he saw the need to expose this usually unexplored territiory of Jazz music, to the ears of the growing Malaysian Jazz audience. Concentrating on the various styles of bop – ranging from the bebop, hardbop and even to the more contemporary sounds of post-bop – BOPLICITY sticks true to what is known as the “Blue Note” sound-style band – two horns (sax and trumpet), with a piano, bass, and drums rhythm section.
Julian Chan - saxophones
Eddie Wen - trumpet/flugelhorn
Vincent Ong
Martin Ngim - drums
Tay Cher Siang - piano

The KL Hardbop Band: - led by Julian Chan and David Gomes, it's the only jazz band in town that plays music from the bebop/hardbop/mainstream era, as well as original compositions in that vein.
David Gomes - piano, vocals
Julian Chan - alto saxophone
Eddie Wen - trumpet/flugelhorn
Thomas Theseira - tenor saxophone
Charles Wong - drums
Vincent Ong, Joe Pruesner, Fly - double bass
