About Me

Over a decade ago, the first Bay Area Anarchist Bookfair began as a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Bound Together Bookstore, a collectively run anarchist bookstore located on San Francisco’s Haight Street. The Bound Together collective presented the first Bay Area Anarchist Bookfair on March 30, 1996.The Spunk Library at the time wrote, “The collective intended to acknowledge 20 years of doing what they do by doing what they do best . . . and that is providing the materials and space for people to discover, display or distribute the alternative, the anarchic, the provocative and the elsewhere suppressed.”The first Bookfair was held in the San Francisco County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park near Ninth Avenue and Lincoln Way, where the event is still held annually today. Admission was free, as it has been for the last eleven years. In 1996, approximately 40 anarchist and alternative book, magazine, and publishers were present at tables selling and distributing materials and examples of their work. Keynote speakers included sex-positive educator, author and radical feminist Susie Bright; Dead Kennedy Jello Biafra; and cutting edge lesbian author, Kathy Acker. The bookfair continues to grow, attracting participants from the bay area and around the world. The 12th Annual Bay Area Bookfair will happen again this March, 2007.Contact:Anarchist Bookfair c/o Bound Together 1369 Haight Street San Francisco, CA 94117
