Chicago is a city in the state of Illinois and the largest in the Midwest. With its population of over 2.8 million people located almost entirely in Cook County (a small portion of O'Hare International Airport overlaps into DuPage County), Chicago is the third largest city in the United States. The population of Chicago's metropolitan area, which covers several counties, contains over 9.7 million people in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, making it the third largest metropolitan area in the U.S. Chicago is classified as an alpha world city.Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837. Its location at the site of a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed, aided the city's rapid growth. Today, Chicago is a major transportation hub, as well as the business, financial, and cultural capital of the Midwest.1637 Jacques Marquette is born. 1645 Louis Jolliet is born. 1673 Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet explored the Midwest region. 1675 Jacques Marquette died. 1700 Louis Jolliet died. 1745 Jean DuSable was born. 1767 Chief Black Hawk was born. 1773 Jean DuSable owned a farm near Peoria. 1779 Jean Baptist Point DuSable built the first settlement where Chicago will later be located. 1803 Fort Dearborn was built. 1812 Fort Dearborn is burned down by Native Americans. 1818 Jean DuSable died. 1818 Illinois became a state. 1832 The Black Hawk War occured. 1833 Chicago was large enough to be incorporated as a town. 1834-1835 The government agents made the Potawatami tribe sell thier land. 1837 Chicago became a city. 1848 The Michigan and Illinois Canal was finished. 1848 The first train came to Chicago. 1871 The Great Chicago Fire occured. 1876 The first Cubs team was formed. 1885 The world's first skyscraper was built. 1892 The first Elevated Train was built. 1893 The Columbian Exposition of 1893 was held. 1900 The Chicago White Sox baseball team was formed. Early 1900s Many immigrants had come to Chicago. 1907-1908 The Chicago Cubs won the World Series. 1926 William Wrigley bought Weeghman Park and named it Wrigley Field. 1933 The World's Fair of 1933 was held. 1934 The World's Fair reopened. 1938 The first subway in Chicago was made. 1949 Orchard Field is renamed to O'Hare Airport. 1969 The John Hancock builing is completed. 1981 William Wrigley sold the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field to the Tribune Company. 1984 Michael Jordan joined the Chicago Bulls. 1986 Bears won the Super Bowl. 1987 Scottie Pippen started playing on the Chicago Bulls. 1999 The Bears' Walter Payton died of cancer.
