My name is Steve Prefontaine but most people just call me Pre. I was born in Coos Bay, Oregon on January 25, 1951. Growing up, I developed a love for running, and decided to run competitively in high school. After having success and breaking several national records as a senior at Marshfield High, I decided to run for the University of Oregon at the collegiate level. I continued my success and quickly became Oregon's number one runner. In my time at Oregon I won three NCAA cross country titles and four national titles in the 5000 meter run in track. There were many other accolades and achievements but there are too many to name in such a small space. I was quickly becoming one of the best distance runners in the world. I competed in the 1972 Olympic Games, after winning the U.S. Trials, held in Eugene, at the historic Hayward Field. I was primed to take an Olympic gold medal at just age 21. Unfortunately, the race didn't go my way and I came in a dissapointing fourth. After my great college career, I competed in many races overseas in Europe in preparation for the next Olympic Games in 1976. During this time, I was virtually unbeatable in any distance over a mile. However, I tragically passed away in a car accident on May 30, 1975. I was just 24. But, My legacy will forever be felt over the world of track and field. I broke multiple world and American records during my brief but brilliant career. To the people of Oregon, I will never be forgotten. However, MY SPIRIT WILL LIVE FOREVER!!!PR's
