I live to express myself through word, sound and light. I am in perpetual flight from the mundane. I am an author, a musician, a teacher, a photographer, and a cabinet/furniture maker.
I play lead guitar in several groups, and I also play the bass, keyboards, drums, mandolin, and the Native American flute. I have a separate MySpace page where I have some of my music posted. If you are a musician or band, friend my music site (same name-Tim Scullion-music site)
I played lead guitar in a road band after high school, but I became disillusioned with the business end of music and all of the lying, cheating and stealing from the booking agents. I decided to go back to school, but I had to support myself first; I became an apprentice cabinet & furniture maker. After a few years at that, I set up my own business so that I could work my own schedule while I went back to school (College of William and Mary). I got my bachelor's degree while working full time (and many sleepless nights) and a master's degree (many more sleepless nights).
After my master's degree I was encouraged and invited to continue working towards a Phd., but I decided to put any further education on hold till I tried something I had always wanted to do: Write. All through my college experience I had been encouraged by my professors to take up writing, and so I finally did.
My first novel tackles the issue of how commercialized the celebration of Christmas is and how much pressure there is on the average American to consume, no matter his or her financial situation. Couple that with the fact that "Santa Claus" bestows mountains of gifts upon the children of the wealthy and avoids the homes of the poor. Since Santa only gives gifts to children who are "good", what are poor children to surmise but that not only are they poor, but they are also not "good". This aspect of the Christmas Story has never set right with me, and so I've attempted in my novel to change the story of St. Nicholas. I think we need to tell our children a different story, a story that does not reward children for their socio-economic status in this world but rewards them for having a good heart--and that would be the story of "Nick".
