Oknegakdagye - Along The Water Dancers

About Me

The Oknegakdagye Dancers are an Iroquoian Dance troupe based out of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory. We do song/dance demonstrations, as well as legends and story telling, that helps us to promote cultural education and awareness among natives and non-natives across the country. The Mohawk reservation of Akwesasne borders U.S. and Canadian Boundary Lines along the St. Lawrence River in Northern New York.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Oknegakdagye (pronounced oak-nay-guk-DA-gay) is a Cayuga word that means "Along the Water". The members of the group are young men and women from across the Six Nations Territories. Currently, there are members from Akwesasne NY, Six Nations ON, Kahnawake PQ, Oneida of the Thames ON, and Tuscarora NY.We felt it important that the name of our group represented all of us. As all of these territories, and many others throughout Haudenosaunee Country, are located near rivers, lakes and other bodies of water, the name "along the water" was chosen.
Influences: Our members have been taught and influenced by many different elders and teachers from across the confederacy.
Sounds Like: We do traditional songs and dances. IE; Stomp Dances, Fish Dances, and SMOKE DANCE.
Type of Label: Major
