Since getting his hands on an early cassette recorder Will Cruttenden has been playing with music and other sounds. A trip to New York in 1981 inspired him, with friend David Thomas, as ‘Sharpsound’ to create a surreal music and comedy outfit which surprised audiences and, frequently, themselves. Exploding ukuleles, playing tiny synths with their feet and deconstructing blues songs to baffled and sometimes hostile audiences took its toll though. David gave up the giddy life of performing while Will concentrated on playing in a string of increasingly mainstream bands.
Through the following decades Will continued creating odd, unlikeable sound experiments while making albums of pop music and playing in successful local covers bands and unsuccessful original ones. In the late nineties he took on the Spingere name and produced three unreleased albums (‘Spingere’, ‘Red Dome Flake’ and ‘Smell the Cheese’) before finally plucking up the courage to let the fourth one out into the world. A year of incidents with ‘neighbours from hell’ provided the emotional triggers and sound samples for the album Coffee-Housing, which is now available on iTunes and many other download sites.
Will has just completed the new Spingere album, 'Perfetc' which is now available on Musiczeit . There will also be a way to buy it as an actual CD, but we're still working on that.
Another Spingere project was taking part in the RPM Challenge - to complete an album in February. Phew! Well, it's complete and called 'The Best Way Out is Always Through'. This too will become available to download sometime in March.
Will currently plays bass and sings with Oxford based bands Soul Beaver and Bridge Street. He’s also working as a touch guitarist/bassist/singer/critic on a variety of new music projects and is looking forward to performing a set of part improvised, part composed music as soon as he finds the time. He can be heard pontificating on the audio commentary for the Centrozoon album 'Lovefield'. Will's touch guitar is made by Mark Warr.
Coffee-Housing is currently available on iTunes and Perfetc can be found here .
