The Chaos Theory, with roots in meteorology, describes the complex and unpredictable motion or dynamics of systems that are sensitive to their initial conditions. There has been a great deal of scientific research dedicated to analyzing change. Until the 1960s, it was believed that if a system's dynamics behaved unpredictably, it was due to random external influences. Scientists concluded that if these random influences could be eradicated, then the behavior of all such deterministic systems could be predicted indefinitely. However, it is now known that many systems can exhibit long-term unpredictability, even in the absence of random external influences. These systems are called chaotic. The unpredictability of chaotic systems comes about from their sensitivity to their initial conditions. Two identical chaotic systems that area set in motion with slightly different initial conditions can quickly exhibit motions that are very different. For example, although the weather may follow broadly similar patterns over the years, which define the climate, it will never precisely repeat past patterns. Chaotic systems are mathematically deterministic-that is, they follow precise laws, but their irregular behavior can appear to be random to the casual observer. Chaotic behavior is also common in systems as varied as electric circuits, measles outbreaks, lasers, clashing gears, heart rhythms, electrical brain activity, circadian rhythms, fluids, animal populations, and chemical reactions. It is suspected that even economic systems, such as the stock exchange, may be chaotic. Even a pendulum, as a simple system, exhibits chaos. But, the field of chaos is evolving rapidly from a theoretical to an applied science.
AFC research scientists are developing atmospheric integrations to surpass the boundaries held down by the Chaos Theory. In applying a series of mathematical equations and other meteorological knowledge, long range forecasting at AFC has become reliable.
