About Me

Laurie is an accomplished musician known for her distinct, melodic voice. She discovered that she had a voice when the NJ Devils had her sing the National Anthem at one of their hockey games back in December 1994. A few weeks later, she received her first guitar, and quickly learned how to play based on a one-time quick lesson on chords taught to her by her younger brother. Two years later, Laurie started touring the open mike scene along the Jersey Shore, meeting friends, collaborating with fellow musicians, jamming til the wee hours of the morning. Her twenties were spent discovering her sound, creating a groove, and writing songs about love and heartache from her life experiences.Laurie started working solo gigs at bars, restaurants, and coffee houses up and down the shoreline mostly in Monmouth and Ocean counties. She polished her sound, and currently works on a regular basis.Laurie also plays the djembe and assorted percussion instruments...I got my layout at Cleanupmyspace.com

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: myspace.com/laurieerlenmeyer
Band Members: As a solo artist: Laurie-- lead vocals, acoustic guitar, djembe, percussion.
Influences: Woman musicians are my biggest influence: Sarah McLachlan (the only person that I would cry if I ever met), Stevie Nicks, Norah Jones, Jewel (the OLD stuff), Natalie Merchant, Alana Davis, Joss Stone, Janis, India Arie, Antigone Rising, Lorenna McKennett, Ani DiFranco, Erikah Badu, Carol King, Diana Krall. I LOVE JAM BANDS-- local and major label: PHISH (my favorite), DMB, Keller Williams, Juggling Suns, U Melt, Ryan Montbleau Band, Breadbox Band, Days Awake, Karmic Juggernaut, any of the PhanPhest bands (Drew has great taste in music). Other local bands like Matt Noffsinger Band (we go waaayyy back), Big Baby Ernie, Yasger's Farm, Mike Dalton. Old favorites like Jamiroquai, Rusted Root, Simon and Garfunkal, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley (BOB!!), B.B. King, Hendrix, Zep (I gotta get more of their stuff), Floyd, Doors, The Dead (some of their stuff), John Denver (I grew up listening to him-- very nostalgic), John Mayer (B sides-- not that body is a wonderland crap), Raol Midon, Amos Lee (I could marry that guy), U2, Pearl Jam, Ollabelle, oh my, I don't have all day....I love jazz (bass lines in jazz are always where its at), jam band music, rock, BLUES- oh god, the slower the better, acoustic mellow stuff, world music like the Putemayo world music collection... Any band or singer that rocks, live music is my favorite thing in the world to see. Pretty much ANYONE that PLAYS an instrument-- and DOESN'T lip sync, use backing tracks, or has back-up dancers (ugh-- the worst) when they play live...
Sounds Like: Voice similar to Jewel, with a bit more soul like Joss Stone, with an evenness like Norah Jones. Musical simialrities are like Jewel's OLDER material, Sarah McLachlan, grooves like Shawn Colvin and Ricky Lee Jones
Record Label: open for discussion
Type of Label: Indie
