-BIOGRAPHY-
Tara Elliott and The Red Velvets has been claimed by The Writing World of Gary Wein, music journalist and playwright as, "With a booming voice and a solid rocking/punk band behind her she kicked ass! She was one part Meat Loaf, one part Romeo Void, one part Janis Joplin, and one part Iggy Pop. She's definitely someone to keep an eye on."
Tara Elliott's sound can be described as equal parts retro and contemporary, with legendary influences ranging from Big Brother and the Holding Company, John Lennon, Muddy Waters, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The Velvet Underground to The White Stripes. A common thread in this sound is the passion of the blues, and the ability and desire to rock.
Tara has spent the past years as a solo performer and singer for diverse acts such as Joyce Bodnar, Barry and The Penetrators, The Juggling Sons and New York's psychedelic orchestra, Illuminati at Asbury Park NJ's The Stone Pony, The Saint, Lake Como's Bar Anticipation, NYC's The Back Fence and McGovern's Bar.
After 12 years of singing the blues n' paying her dues, Tara discovered her truth: her lust for punk rock. The moment she first listened to Iggy Pop and the Stooges' classic “I Wanna Be Your Dogâ€, Tara became intrigued and craved a complete musical transformation. Tara's songwriting took a 180 degree spin which ignited the blues, punk and classic rock into her own explosive expression.
She trudged the earth (the internet and dive rock bars) seeking other musicians to share her vision. Through many trials and tribulations, Tara finally found the accompaniment she deserved which she later named the Red Velvets, consisting of: Mr. Werner Wilding (Austrian Actor on Drums) and Mr. Jeffery Phillips (Zee Mighty Jeffers on Bass). Since Tara Elliott and the Red Velvets birthed they have rocked NJ's: The Saint, Bar Anticipation, The Clash Bar, Chubby's, The Lamp Post, NYC's: Arlene's Grocery, Otto's Shrunken Head, The R- Bar, Connolly's Klub 45, Bar Matchless, Don Pedro's, CORIO: Home of the Burlesque!, The Shrine And more...
Tara's originals convey an independent perspective. It is one that is neither of a victim or a passive observer. It also is one that is not afraid to use an occasional cliche "A Leopard's Spots Don't Change" or a direct statement "You Just Wanna Be Me" as well as "Better Off On My Own". In the end, the speaker in the songs is always engaged and emotionally direct whether or not she is heartbroken, angry or ecstatic as in "Beautiful Lies".
Enjoy Tara Elliott and the Red Velvets' music for sound and soul, yet listen for truth and emotion.
