excerpts taken from May/June 2008 issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine:
By Dan Miller
Although I’ve known Mickey Abraham for several years, I’d never heard him play music until I was preparing this issue of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine in March of 2008. Mickey and I have had several phone conversations about playing and teaching music and the reason that I became interested in hearing him play was because of his enthusiasm for music and his extremely positive attitude about teaching, playing, performing, and recording. Mickey is the kind of guy that is excited enough about what he does that he is able to get everyone else excited about it too. I’m sure that Tony Rice and David Grisman would agree as they both saw Mickey in action when he helped pull together a very successful benefit concert for Larry Rice shortly before Larry’s passing. Grisman was so impressed with Mickey that he is releasing Mickey’s new CD with the Aaron O’Rourke Trio as a digital download on the Acoustic Disc label.
While Mickey certainly has the talent to make it as a performing musician, his ability to excite others also makes him an excellent teacher and promoter of acoustic music. He currently performs with two bands, teaches private lessons, and teaches the Tallahassee Fiddlers, a bluegrass class offered through the Tallahassee Symphony Youth Orchestra (TSYO)...
...Mickey, as a composer and performer, is always searching for something new. The project that is going to be featured on Acoustic Disc is the Aaron O’Rourke Trio. Mickey contributes his creative mandolin and musical sensibilities in that band along with mountain dulcimer player O’Rourke on progressive old-time tunes. Mickey said, “Aaron is like the Bela Fleck of dulcimer. He is doing stuff that has never been done before.” The other band that Mickey performs in is with guitarist Gabe Valla. Mickey said, “Gabe is an incredibly tasty guitar player from over in St. Augustine. He won the Merlefest contest back when he was sixteen. Playing with Gabe allows me to explore my instrument’s extreme tonal possibilities, because he’s a tone freak.” Mickey and Gabe’s guitar artistry headlined at the Florida Folk Festival last November...
