Norwegian saxophonist Anders Lønne Grønseth and the British pianist David Skinner have been collaborating for several years. With the jazz quartet Sphinx, they have toured extensively, released albums and received international prizes and acclaim for their music.
In duo-format, they are seeking new directions. Impulses from classical music, particularly of the 20th century, ethnic music from different parts of the world and jazz comes out in a personal expression. The borders between the improvised and the composed are challenged and come together in imaginative and innovative chamber music.
As a duo they have released two CDs:
Arc en ciel (2008)This album features partly-improvised arrangements of works by Messiaen, Ligeti and Bartok.
Phantasmagoria (2006)
On this release, the duo improvise over seven of their own compositions, and give the listener a chance to participate in exploration of unusual tonalities and rhythms, improvised forms and shapes, and expressions from the quiet and contemplative to the ecstatic and rude.
