Typecast is a Montreal-based live hip hop act, blending aspects of funk, jazz, blues and latin vibes with energetic rap lyrics and compelling melodic hooks. The effect is a diverse and original sound that is strangely familiar at the same time. Song topics range from classic hip hop party themes ("Spot to call my own") to goofy rockabilly ("Let the Poppers Pop") to introspective and abstract ("Icarus"). On stage, typecast is charismatic and light hearted, joking and dancing and bringing positive energy to get the crowd moving.
In an era where hip hop has become so obsessed with image that rappers seem more like cartoon characters than real people, Typecast brings a refreshingly honest and down-to-earth perspective. Constantly evolving and changing (not just despite the name, but because of it), Typecast has taken many forms and had worked with dozens of artists over the past 4 years. The current manifestation includes Rafael Ramos on bass, Luke Mackay on drums, Jess Steiner on vocals and keys, Chris Cameron playing flute and production, Jono Hunt on guitar and vocals, and Louis Deering on lead vocals and front man antics.
Typecast has a new album in the works, scheduled for release in conjunction with Savoir Faire Recods, MTL, in February 2009.
