About Me

Walking the city at night especially during the week when the sounds of weekend revelling don't interfere, I noticed (as I guess everyone will have) the spooky repetitiveness of noisepatterns in a big city. Though made up of countless superficially unrelated individual sounds, the resulting cacophony seems to follow an undercurrent of rhythm and even strangely harmonic flow - the sound of a never sleeping hive supporting itself.

Any individual of the hive is apparently following his or her own goals, schedules and patterns but is perpetually and irrevocably intertwined with neighbours, work- and other hivemates - classified, claimed and controlled by the system of the hive.

I spent countless nights in various backyards, subway tubes, industrial areas and derelict houses with recording equipment trying to capture the sounds of the hive.
The recordings were heavily compressed, pitched downwards, filtered and compressed again. The resulting dark soundscapes were layered, mixed with some musicsamples and the heavily resonating, interfering pads arranged into patterns - not songs really, but some sort of accoustic pictures - trying to mirror and stress the subtle harmonic undercurrent of the urban background noises.

Mikolajewicz "Gleiche Höhe Ist Kein Abseits"
This one's a bit more on the trip-hoppier side of things - relaxed chill stuff with only a slight hint of morbidness. Downtempo trip-hop beats and smooth samples - atmospheric stuff like almost everyone produced at that time (1995 - 2000: Massive, Portishead, DJ Shadow, Dj Krush etc.)

Mikolajewicz "Sven Die Gondeln Trauer Tragen"
(featuring Visit Venus' Mario von Hacht, Instant Wilkie's Vincent, Daniel Khimaz, Kayum Khimaz)
The alternative title was "Sven The Postman Rings Twice" but I settled for german once again. The album received a couple of good reviews but was criticized for mocking the Shroud of Turin and using satanic symbols. Good grief.

Mikolajewicz "Ernte 23" (12")
(featuring Visit Venus' Mario von Hacht)
The self-made animation video for "Ernte23" was a low budget production (400 DM - roughly €200) together with Rasmus Hirthe, Victoria Schwartz and Katrine Hoop. It won the Hamburg Shortfilm Contest in 2000 and was the cheapest video ever to get a rotation on german musicchannel Viva2.
