Pursuing... her love of music brought about the completion of several degrees (BAHons/MA/LTCL) with specializations in Music Theatre, Performance, and Jazz Improvisation and the Vocalist the latter culminating in a substantial recital encompassing many of the great songs made famous by the Ladies of Jazz & supported by her own band, First Circle(later re-named Strange but True)in addition, whilst researching Jazz Improvisation & the Vocalist, studied briefly with noted Jazz singer/educator Louise Gibbs, honing valuable skills in the art of scat singing & harmonic flexibility
Membership of JSN (Jazz singers network) back in the 90s led to workshops with American Jazz vocal giants Mark Murphy and Marion Montgomery and a slot at the 606 club, Chelsea
Regular gigging followed, with a weekly residency in Kingston, Surrey and a visit with the band to the Delft Cultural Festival in 93, linking up with musicians from around the world and performing in a variety of venues not least being within the confines of a Dutch tram in a spot of impromptu busking with fellow musician & his saxophone!
Currently... working on promotion of debut CD Strange But True, released November 2004, a mix of predominantly original material, supported by Bristol-based guitarist Andy Christie and others from around the UK...
Heavily influenced... by an eclectic background in World music in particular, the vibrancy of Latin American dance rhythms & Afro-Caribbean jazz/blues roots Julies performing style embraces the lush melodies of the enduring jazz standards repertoire as well as seeking to break new ground with dynamic yet sensitive original compositions, a number of which will be found on the forthcoming CD
Repertoire comprises numerous tunes from Mainstream, Swing, Contemporary, Latin Jazz, Music Theatre, Cabaret including French chanson/Piaf/Spanish/Portuguese Songs, with a hint of Gospel & Funk thrown in for good measure
Works... either Solo, accompanying herself on the piano/keyboards, or in Duo/Trio/Quartet + combo even Big Bands...
