Hervé Birolini studied electro-acoustic composition at the Centre Européen de Recherche Musicale (CERM) from 1990 to 1993. He went on to complete a postgraduate diploma in audiovisual production, before joining the Paris-based GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) in 1994 as chief sound engineer for the « Multiphonie » and « Présences électroniques » concert series. This involvement would ultimately inspire him to start writing his own music in 2000.
His work first came to attention at national level in 2003, when he won the INA/ GRM grant, awarded as part of the Phonurgia Nova Arles Summer School, for his work « ADN « Concret-mentaire ». A few months later, he received international acclaim for « Rêverie Vénitienne aux sons enfouis », which won the First Prize for Sound Art at the Mexico International Radio Biennale (2O04).
In 2005, the city of Nancy commissioned a large-scale work to be played on the celebrated Place Stanislas which has recently been restored, during a night of celebrations of the city's architectural heritage. The result was »Perséides », a work for 21 loudspeakers, which was also distributed on the night to the audience as a stereo CD. The same year, Birolini also won the 6th Radio Art competition organised by la Muse en circuit. He has been appointed associate composer at Césaré, the National Centre for Musical Creation, in Reims, and was one of the winners of the 2008 Lorraine Grand Prix.
His works have been performed at festivals such as Musique Action (France), Signal and Noise (Vancouver), Archipel (Suisse), Futura, Entre cours et jardins, and the Patchwork Festival, and are frequently broadcast on radio stations such as France Culture (Atelier de Création Radiophonique), Deutchlandradio, R.N.E. (Spanish National Radio), Education Radio (Mexico), Radio Praha (Czech Republic), Radio Libertaire, Arte Radio, Silence radio (Belgium), and Radia. Films and TV programmes for which he composed the soundtrack have been broadcast on Arte, France 2 and France 3.
