Young Brixx City (Nana Afriyie) was born in Ghana, West Africa on August 3 1986. At the age of 3 Nana and his mother moved to Greensboro North Carolina. Growing up in the church, Brixx City realized how important music was to people and how deeply it affected some. He fell in love with the ability of a song to change the mood of a person. When he turned 8 his family moved to Worcester Mass, where Brixx City attended a performing arts schools and programs. It was at these schools and programs that City learned how to articulate himself through the use of an extensive vocabulary, which would come to serve him well as he would later come to find out.
When Brixx City turned 12 his friend bet him that he couldn’t rap. Never one to stray for a challenge, Brixx City took on the challenge with tenacity. After a couple of years of perfecting his sound and stage presence, Brixx City headed to the streets of Worcester where he would come to be known as one of the most creative and comedic punch line rappers in Central Mass. With 5 rap battle titles under his belt, Brixx City decided to try his hand at more commercial success.
In 2004 Brixx City made one more move that would prove to be the icing on his cake of success; Brixx moved to Mississippi to attend college. In Mississippi, Brixx City continued his reign as a battle mc winning Boost Mobile’s 2005 rap battle challenge. In 2007 Brixx City rekindled his friendship with prolific producer Antoine Baldwin of Black Audio Productions (Chicago IL). With the two back together again the music became second nature. By taking his commanding vernacular and stage presence and combining it with the smooth melodic sounds of Baldwin’s Black Audio Production the two have created a unique sound, not heard in hip hop in some time. When asked by a local newspaper how they describe their sound, the two responded “Some people make rap because its in their thoughts, some people make hip hop because it’s in their hearts, we make soulhop music because we use our thoughts, hearts, and soul.â€
Brixx City and Antoine Baldwin are currently working on the compilation of their second album, Perfect Timing 2..
