I am here for Serious Relationships

About Me

Hello, I am Joanne Goldwater.  As the assistant dean for Residential Life, I have the overall responsibility for supervising the residence life program.   I also supervise the Health Center, Counseling Center, and Judicial Affairs.  The director of Health Services, director of Counseling Services, the assistant director of Residence Life, and the Residence Life secretary report directly to me.   I select, train, supervise, and evaluate the Residence Life staff; supervise and evaluate the Health and Counseling Center staff; provide support and counseling to students and staff; manage the Residence Life departmental budget; develop and review our emergency protocols; manage our on-call system; develop, review, interpret, and enforce policies; and I work closely with parents and numerous College offices and community-based agencies.  I work closely with the vice president and dean of the College to develop and implement long-range goals for the Division of Student Affairs.
I have worked in the field of higher education for over 14 years.  I have a master’s degree in counseling and guidance from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.  My bachelor’s of science degree is also from UNCG, in deaf education. I came to SMCM in 1993 as the director of Residence Life and became the assistant dean for Residential Life in January 2000.  Besides my full-time administrative role, I also teach the Introduction to Sign Language course (EDSP 180) each semester.
