Boxing Tournament (Fight One)
My Championship Fight (Fight Two)
A Note To My Two Boys:
If I die at the hands of my enemy, there are some things that I want you to know. Many nights I stood over your crib, watching you sleep so peacefully. I ask myself why, why do I do it? Why do I risk my life for freedom when I have a son who needs me? What drives me to do what my Dad did to me when I was your age? What drives me to leave you in your crib; putting on my uniform, grabbing my gear, and loading my rifle to defend the freedom that you were born with? I ask myself “Will my Son understand the sacrifice that I've made for this country if I never return to his arms?â€
Isaiah, please understand that when I’m in some country far away from you, rolled up in a poncho on a cold rocky surface trying to stay warm… I may sleep miserably, but I know that you are curled up in a warm blanket with a teddy bear in your arms and a picture of me hanging above your crib. When I wake up to the sounds of bullets flying, exploding grenades, and fragments falling to the ground, with death lurking in the area… I know that you will be waking up to the sweet sounds of your mothers’ voice, calling your name, smiling at her from cheek to cheek. Son… I realize why I do this, why my Father and my Grandfather did it for me; it’s because of you, because of our family, because of God, Country, and Corps. Even though a lot of people in this country don’t even care; I do it for them without asking for the recognition. I just can’t bear the thought of what your life would be like if you didn’t have people like me defending the very freedom that this country lacks the appreciation for.
So as I walk away from your crib tonight to answer our country’s 911 calls, wiping the tears from my eyes, I will whisper these words into your ear…
“Sleep well my Son… your Father is a U.S. Marine.â€
