Neon Jesus Biography - 2003
"Neon Jesus: In 1995, Ocean of Confusion vocalist Scotty P., Drummer JD II, and cyber-angel Joshua recruited bassist Lord Thomas (whose band Plush had recently bitten the dust). They changed their name to Fuck Machine, but, as Lord Thomas explains, "Only for 10 gigs until we changed it for industry reasons. Plain and simple: we couldn't get gigs, airplay or have out name in ads or up on a marquee." The new name they chose, Neon Jesus, is the title of one of their songs. Both are indictive of the music as Scotty expounds its meaning. "I prefer people to make up their own minds about what the songs are about and leave them open for interpretation. But that particular song ("Neon Jesus") is about somebody who doesn't have control over himself. I guess I have some kind of bizarre Christ fixation but I'm not into the religion part of it, just the images and words. It's a metaphor for all things fucked up: the Neon Jesus screaming obscenities from high atop his trash heap, the little voice that speaks to you from inside your head -- The bad one that tells you to do bad things. It's about darkness and rage." The band has a 3-song demo available (produced by Tim Miller) and recently went back into the studio to remix two of the songs. Although the band cites Ministry, Led Zeppelin, Jane's Addiction, Pink Floyd, and Smashing Pumpkins as influences, if you threw all those into a stew and then added a dose of Faith No More and Type-O Negative, you'd only come 1/4 of the way close to what the band sounds like. Dark, heavy, brooding, sarcastic, and sinister -- Neon Jesus will lock you in and steal your soul. "Yeah, we just want to spread the word of Satan!" jokes Lord Thomas. Don't wait for the Second Coming -- check out the rock 'n' roll gospel at a club near you! "
