Unveil is an acoustic world music trio based in Helsinki, Finland. Formed in late 2005
by pianist Marja Teittinen, guitarist/oudist Jussi Reijonen and percussionist Karo Sampela,
Unveil combines sounds and shades from around the Mediterranean with an experimental
slant on acoustic textures and soundscapes.
The trio's original compositions, as well as their daring remakes of classic songs by the likes of Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Al DiMeola, combine the different influences of its members, resulting in a unique texture of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Scandinavian sounds, interwoven with shades of latin and traditional jazz. Without actually changing instruments, roles within the trio are often reversed: it is characteristic of Unveil's music to blur the boundaries between the instruments themselves, as well as those between form and improvisation. Using traditional instruments such as the grand piano, nylon-string, steel-string and fretless guitars, the oud (an 11-string Arab lute) and various drums like the cajón, the darbouka and the udu in untraditional ways has become something of a signature for the band, and one that helps create an illusion of a larger ensemble than just a threesome.
