Mark Knippel (b. 1983) studied composition at Southern Oregon University, primarily under Todd Barton and Wayne Slawson . He graduated in 2006 with a BA in music composition and education. He has written for saxophone quartet, woodwind quintet, and various other chamber groups, and for concert band, theater projects and film. His saxophone quartet, "At the Loss of Love and Folly", has been published by Dorn Publications . Current projects include works for string orchestra, string quartet, a graphic score for mobile phones, and music for any number of instruments. Mark completed an assistantship for the world-premiere musical, Tracy's Tiger , at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon in 2006. He has received the ASCAPlus Award, and received the Schneider Award, given to the outstanding music student at Southern Oregon University, in 2006. Mark was an employee of the Britt Festivals in Medford, Oregon, where he served as the Education Assistant from 2005-2008. Mark is currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Oregon, where he is a Graduate Teaching Fellow in Music Theory. His current composition teachers are Dr. Robert Kyr and Dr. David Crumb .

Influences: Those I have worked with in the past (HOST!), my teachers (Todd Barton, Jody Henderson, Terry Longshore, Larry Hudson to name a few). Outside influences include Indian classical music, African music, particularly that of the Shona people of Zimbabwe (thanks to my lovely girlfriend, Jenifer Jaseau ), Steve Reich, Witold Lutoslawski, Shostakovich, Edgard Varese and Beethoven.
