Tin Whistle & Guitar

A tin whistle and guitar player with a taste for celtic and Australian folk. I have been adding a bit of whistle to the colonial trad punk outfit 'Catgut Mary' having played in a traditional celtic folk band 'Ardmore' for the last decade or so. A few festivals have come my way including Numeralla, Maldon, Illawarra, Kilmore, Frances, Mt Dandenong,
The Basin , and a few bit parts at Port Fairy. I've had some fun playing whistle for a couple of tracks on The Go Set's latest album; 'rising' as well as assorted shenanigans while touring alongside them with the Catgut Mary crew.
As for myself, I sing a blend of traditional and contemporary folk in a laid back style, garnished with the occasional cover. My act is tailored to suit smaller restaurants, cafes and bars where an unobtrusive and authentic folk sound provides a cosy ambience.
You might catch me playing in several of the Celtic sessions around Melbourne. Further out in the sticks, I'm happy playing with anyone kind enough to allow me near a microphone.
Over the last 20 years, I have also developed considerable experience in running sound systems for bands at venues, festivals and events. I specialise in amplified sound for acoustic musicians and folk bands at small & medium sized venues.
Where did it begin? Many years ago. much to the disappointment of my music teachers, I spurned the flute and recorder for the tin whistle. Dad and I used to stay up late in his shack in far east Gippsland playing the folk music we loved, sharing tunes with any musicians who came within the radar. On really special nights, we'd fire up the old gut-buster generator and listen to his LP collection with a healthy dose of Wolfe Tones, Chieftains (remember the numbered albums?), and The Clancy Brothers amongst others. As the neolithic record player would pulse in harmony with the warbling two-stroke over platters warped into strange and beautiful shapes by the shimmering heat of many long Gippsland summers, we'd sip Dad's home brew and ponder how each tune might sound on the box and whistle.
I lost dad back in 1999, but like to think of each tune as a tap on the shoulder from the old man.
