A lot of people tell me that a bio should be written by an objective third party, perhaps a friend or writer-for-hire. I had one of those, and while it was a fine piece of literature written by a good friend, somehow I felt you’d be better served to read about me - from me.
My mother is a retired Marine. That little tidbit kept me on the move for most of my life - Pennsylvania, Missouri, Kansas, North Carolina, New York, and now Tennessee. I don’t remember exactly when I started singing, but I remember my first performance. I was five years old, singing solo at church on Father’s Day, in front of about 2000 church members. Guess I got the bug early. Speaking of fathers, I was 12 when mine passed away. We never had much, so my inheritance took the form of his old guitar, and I’ve been playing ever since.
By my sophomore year in college, I knew that Nashville was where I needed to be, but I went ahead and finished school. I don’t quit much. In the mean time, I got a band together, played all over upstate New York, and even won a few “Battle of the Bands†competitions. Fun stuff.
The real work is here and now, in Nashville, where I’ve been for the last four years. All that moving around while growing up is gone, and I don’t plan on pulling roots anytime soon. Now I’ve been fortunate to write songs with some of the absolute best writers on the planet, record in world-class studios (with insanely talented players) and love every minute of it.
The bar is high – good thing my mom was a Marine and taught me how to do chin-ups.
