Featuring the often proclaimed founder of crustcore with his ex-band HELLBASTARD, Vocalist Scruff Lewty comments Were not 15 years old anymore, so this is gonna be interesting. Drummer Zen adds this is gonna be the first time in many years that the uk have had such an aural attack on the senses,Im not trying to say that we are the greatest,..but we sure do come fucking close Rehearsals have been more than energetic and fuelled by sheer aggression, so all in all itll be interesting to see how our audience reacts to a genre that died a few months after the classic 1980s Hear Nothing. Lp was released by our mentors the uks finest, often imitated-but never bettered - Discharge.
All in all, Dis-Core has been done to death, but The Dischargers inject some fresh new blood into this rotting corpse of monochrome spiky anger. The material on their debut, Theres No Place Like Hell is awash with subtle quirkiness and rage, sheer raw emotionally charged violence. Rabid.
In an e-mail from David Jeursen (Guitarist with Belgiums premier Psychobilly-Punk-Speedkings Hellsonics) my Belgian friend of over 15 years he, remarked; Lets do a DISCHARGE-ish band called THE DISCHARGERS I replied,O.k, and lets call the album, Theres No Place Like Hell
That was in 2005, Now its 2006 and the album is done, your holding it in your hands. Lets face it, there are fans of Discharge, and there are FANS of DISCHARGE. WE ARE FANS OF DISCHARGE. For the uninitiated, Discharge blasted onto the worldwide music scene in 1979/80 like an exploding nail bomb, a battering ram straight from hell. They consisted of Four spikey-tops from Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent, U.K. For the disaffected kids out there they had all the right credentials, growling, menacing, guttural vocals, searing chainsaw guitars, bulldozing bass and blasting hellish crossfire drumming.
We have subconsciously emulated this with this album, but it took time and effort. First, we needed a band! David had a guitarist in mind immediately, as he asked me to sing, no, he ORDERED me to sing, great huh?? So I agreed. With David wanting to handle bassman duties things were looking good , BUT we were a guitarist short, .David recruited his old time friend Zeno Declercq on drums,an absolutely huge discharge fan, a punk-to-the-bone kind of chap, in fact,a terrorist. Nice. Then there was Munphie who the original DISCHARGERS line up rehearsed with, but something awful happened. We had arranged a date to record the album after they had rehearsed all the songs and gotten tight, and literally a few days before my Eurostar left from London Via Brussels, Munphie QUITS the band !!! SHOCK !!! HORROR!!! OH, FUCK !!!! A day went by and. Enter Stefan De Leersnijder, a real freak. Stef is an old school UK hardcore fan,(not unlike Zeno)..and NO ONE , (apart from David) likes Discharge more than Stefan. Hes like a walking gig flyer, I cannot say enough about those two. Fucking solid blokes and great to do a band with, awesome. So,with David on bass, myself screaming and Stef and Zen we shot ahead with it all. Not that easy,or WAS it ? Stefan learnt the whole set within hours,.after David had dropped off a rehearsal tape to his house and of course MET the guy! David had previously only SEEN Stef walking around Antwerp, and with a stroke of luck, got his phone number and,..the rest is history.(Oddly enough I briefly met Stef at a Broken Bones show in Belgium 3 or 4 years before all of this) Nice. Meanwhile I had been putting the finishing touches to the lyrics, my rehearsal tape had almost worn itself out. I informed David that I needed a NEW one,and a few days later in the mail it arrives. Nicer.
Sitting on the train from Bath to London I had thought of the two pieces of music I had contributed to this album, fuck it. I scrapped them , too metal. So the riffs went around my head and I decided to come up with Beautiful Funeral, wrote it there and then in my head on the train, simple lyrics, simple riffs.total DISCHARGERS. Nice, couldnt help feeling guilty though, fair enough Id written the lyrics, but ONE song? One full song? Oh well, no one seemed to mind, and the tracks that David, Zen & Stef had together were just awesome anyway, so, bollocks. There was only one tune that I couldnt for the life of me get my head around,Constant Fear,..so , KindlyZENO sung it(good man), just listen to how PUNK ROCK he is,.see what I mean !???
Within 3 hours of arriving in Antwerp and David picking me up (and being treat like royalty from Ingrid and David) we were in the studio rehearsing, it was awesome. First time we had all played together and it was like a BOMB. Everyone just smiled and we loved it, so much so that we went through the set a few times more. Big mistake. We got to the studio and set up on the Friday evening, on the Saturday (day one of recording) I couldnt sing a note,my voice was totally shredded from the Thursday rehearsals. FUCK! I moped and moped and got angry and did some more moping about, did some directing whilst the drums were being laid down, ate the food that Ingrid kindly brought us and did some more mooching about. Made endless cups of tea that Bart the skinhead studio owner supplied, (nice one, Bart!!) and ,..well,did some more moaning and moping about. To make things interesting , Ingrid kindly offered to film us so that we could make a DVD of the song Art-War for this disc, (well, my friend in Italy-Gabby- worked hard on the enhanced parts of this cd). .I had a shot at scene-by-scene directing and hey presto!..One Dischargers video in the CAN. Finally, all the tracks were down with DIS-FINESSE and we cheered. I already knew Id have to do the vocals in England, which I didnt really want to do, but John Carter & his April Media Productions (Plymouth, Devon-UK) saved the day for all that, cos he being an old punk and all knew exactly what we were after. And he got it perfectly. Of course, I had to twist the arms of 2 FURY76 Staff, Mr. Sam Gillard & Mr. Paul Smart to do some extra backing vocals, which they did a mighty good job of, by the way. After we finished the vocals we cracked open a few bottles of organic red wine, and had a jolly good drinky. And we deserved it, too. After all these years since my first serious involvement with studio recording (1983/1984) I have realised one important thing, to get a good vibe for an album, a band has to be IN SINK and totally focused on their task at hand. We did this in Belgium, with this album, and thats why I love this so much. Its like going full-circle with all the music I have personally recorded over the years, and its ironic that I can finally say,..: Well, fucking hell, I LOVE this album!!. Why? Because of the URGENCY it has, the FEELING and most of all the BOND that the four of us noisy bastards had whilst doing it. Theres a lot more to this DISTORY, a LOT more, but for now all Id like to say is..Heres to DISCHARGERS 2 !!! Fuck, YEAH ! Bring it on !! The DIS-WAR..
