The Steelton Fire Department, organized in 1882, continues to provide fire suppression, rescue, and medical services to the Borough of Steelton and the surrounding communities. The Steelton Fire Department, in it's hayday, consisted of 4 Engine Companies, 1 Truck Company, and 1 combined Engine and Rescue Company. The Department had 7 different companies over the years, The Citizen Hose Company No. 1 (Engine Co. 50), Paxtang Hook & Ladder Company No. 2 (Ladder Co. 50), West Side Hose Company No. 3 (Engine Co. 52, Ladder Co. 52, Truck Co. 50), Baldwin Hose Company No. 4 (Engine Co. 53 & 53-1), Hygienic Hose Company No. 5 (Engine Co. 54, Engine Co. 51-1), East End Hose Company No. 6 (Engine Co. 51), and the re-organized Hygienic Fire & Rescue Company No. 7 (Engine Co. 51-1 & Rescue Co. 50.Over the years several of the companies re-organized or disbanded. In 1983, merger talks with the Borough Council and the fire department lead to merging of all of the remaining companies into 1 centralized station. The new station, built in 1983 & 84 would house 1 engine company, 1 wagon company, 1 truck company, and 1 heavy rescue company (Engine, Wagon, Truck, and Rescue 50). This transitioned into 2 engine companies, 1 truck company, and 1 rescue company (Engine, Truck, and Rescue 50, and Engine 50-1).Now the Department runs an engine company, truck company, and rescue company (Engine, Truck, and Rescue 50).The Department operates with a Chief, an Assistant Chief, and 2 Battallion Chiefs (all Borough appointed), a Captain and 3 Lieutenants (all Company elected). The Company operates with a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Board of Directors (all Company elected).
