I go to som sh*tty all girls school where I hav 2 board n it costs loaza money but it is totally not worth the effort of writin the cheques! (01837) 851282Dear Sirs at Bradleys Estate Agents,To introduce myself - I’m Lizzy, I’m 17 and studying (hard!) for my A2 levels at Okehampton College. Until a year ago I was exceptionally lucky enough to have a place at a highly thought of school this was Stonar School - Wiltshire. I was fortunate enough five years ago to be awarded an equestrian scholarship - the opportunity to have the backing of an equestrian team as well as a very good education was a chance not to miss. I was also offered a further scholarship into the 6th form along with only one other girl out of many applicants for my equestrian achievements and ability. However, after much consideration I decided that to further my passionate hobby and obtain good A level results the best alternative is to return to Okehampton College.I live on a 100-acre farm 9 miles from Okehampton and 5miles from North Tawton. Sadly, it is all rented now due to my mum having to care for my dad who suffered a brain haemorrhage 11 years ago. We have converted some of the barns into stables for my horses and I‘m lucky enough to have an arena to work my horses in the winter. Mum works hard on schooling other peoples horses in order that I may be able to nearly afford to compete at the levels I want. I also have a younger brother Chris who is dragged along to most competitions when I am sure he would rather be playing rugby or galloping through the forest on his pony! You will see as you turn the pages of my portfolio, that from the age of 9 I have been lucky enough to compete as a team member of our pony club (Eggesford), riding Club (Mid Devon) and during the last three years as a South West British Dressage Young Rider and a National Pony Event Rider. As I have grown (slightly!), so have my mounts! Three of them we have owned (two of them I still own) and three of them have been loaned, all of whom we have worked together (Mum, the ponies and I) to create ’little superstars!’ along with good results - None of them have been what you may call ’conventional!!! With personalities that mean along with the good days there also comes bad days when you wish you had never got out of bed!!!Step by step with an awful lot of luck I am climbing what seems to be a very long ladder with only one thing in mind - to ’GO FOR GOLD!’ It would be a dream come true to do this and mum gets goose pimples (or so she says!) every time I mention that Olympic podium! My sport is about luck, determination and the essence of talent so I do believe Olympic gold is within everybody’s reach even those who do not live in million dollar mansions! In October 2004, we stepped across a very rough sea when I was invited to have the chance to wear a Union Jack and compete in a British team. I was part of one of the five teams from England, Scotland and Wales given the chance to compete in Ireland to have the chance of a lifetime (the first of many - I Hope!!!) to compete against four Irish teams. In our team (The Wales and West Ladies!!!) we braved the wet, the wind and the mud to come home with team gold and I won individual 6th out of 40 of the top Pony Event riders in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, an amazing result but a very long way to get it!The next year held lots of surprises, tears and decisions. My GCSE’s loomed upon me of which I had to work exceptionally hard to achieve my results of 6 B’s, 3 A’s and 1 A* (considering as I was convinced I’d failed each and every one of them these results were a pleasant shock!!!) Whilst doing my GCSE’s I competed in the British Pony Championships where I was 10th out of every pony event rider in the country - trust me there are 1000’s of children who would give anything to even compete at this prestigious competition let alone come home with a rosette! This along with my results from the preliminary rounds and qualifiers secured my place as 1st Reserve for the GB European Pony Event team, at this I was thrilled but admittedly there was a part of me that was upset that I was so near but so far from being able to go to the Europeans in Italy 2005. Instead I was invited to go to Necarne Castle (Northern Ireland) to compete for GB in the Irish Pony Championships, I got to ride with Union Jacks on and that has got to be high on every “horsey“ persons dream list. Summer 2005 held many different events and activities. I qualified for the third year running by winning my sections for the Pony Club National Championships for Dressage and Eventing, this was fantastic because I’m one of very few people who have competed at the Championships three years in a row (Hopefully there are many more chances to come!) for more than one discipline. I also passed my pony club B test which means I can now teach others to ride and it also enables me to wear pieces of equipment on my horses that people of a lesser standard are not allowed to wear without special permission. 2005 proved to be very successful and knowing that I’m so nearly on the European team has only made me more determined to get to the top and “Go-For-Gold“!!!Now for the tears! On the 17th August we set off in our dear old B-reg Bedford horse lorry as usual but this journey was the end of an era and the fact that you should live each day to the full because you never know what may happen really sank in. Luckily I’m still here to tell the tale but no one’s quite sure how. At the top of a typical Cornish hill (the one going down into Cardinham-if anyone knows the area!) one of the three horses on the lorry lost it’s balance so mum (who was driving) put her foot gently on the break in order to slow a couple MPH (we were only travelling at 10MPH to begin with due to the sheer steepness of the hill). The breaks on the lorry did not respond even when mum had put the foot break to the floor and the hand-break on. We hit hedges and trees, coming to a standstill at nearly the bottom of the hill which had many bends along it, at one point we left the road like a rally car and must have been reaching speeds of 85mph. To this day I still wake up at night because I’m re-living the event in my sleep. The lorry was a total write off as one side was dented, the other was bulging out, the windscreen had come out, the front of the lorry had opened up, half of the left side had been ripped off and the contents of 24ft of lorry was in the front 9ft of it including two of the horses. The emergency services (both of the ambulances, 2 fire engines, the air ambulance, 7 police cars and the RSPCA!!!) could not believe their eyes when 3 horses and 5humans emerged out of such an ordeal with only cuts, bruises and whiplash. They told us that they would not have been surprised if they had come to find us dead looking at the mess the lorry was and what we had been through. This all happened five days before the Pony Club National Championships and my pony Darby’s Knap I was supposed to be riding was onboard the lorry. The Championships are a 7½hr drive and Tufty had 14stitches in his lip where it had been practically ripped off. Through trust on Tufty’s behalf and determination on mum and my behalf we got to the championships! We came 2nd as a team Nationally and I was 6th in the eventing. I could not have been more thrilled.Due to the lorry accident it was clear that a new method of transport would have to be purchased. This we could not afford but as we were due to go to Northern Ireland 2weeks later and the fact that I wanted to carry on competing it was necessary. We now have an F-reg Ford Cargo Lorry which is lovely but luxury does not come without a price! Due to it’s age repairs are quite frequent but a newer model would have added around £5000 onto the price, this I’m sure like many people we could not afford.Winter 2005/6 has been occupied by a hard change-over from ponies to horses because of my age. At the moment I have a 13year old mare who has been given to me on loan by Lian Doble whilst she is at university for two years. I also have a rescue horse called Mac, he is going to be a long term project and may never be able to stand up to competition again but I believe with any horse it is worth a try! Darby’s Knap did not belong to me so I could not use the money of his sale to put towards a horse, many of my eventing friends have been lucky enough to have owned their ponies so they could afford to buy their horse but I was not able to be in the same situation. Again due to the fact that we have had to purchase a new (well new to us) lorry, my savings account that I had kept to buy my first horse was raided to pay for part of the lorry! Consequently I have little to no funds to buy a horse with any experience, this is why I am so grateful to Lian for letting me ride La Belle II because I simply cannot afford to buy my own horse that has achieved a sufficient level of experience in my current situation. The Equestrian World from an ‘onlookers’ point of view may be considered as a world where money is no object! - This I can promise you is far from the truth! Many of my friends are in the same situation as myself, wondering were the next lot of pennies is going to come from to get us to the next event with horses that are shod and properly tacked! Along with having talent and determination you can not get anywhere for free so everything comes down to that awful word - FINANCE.Riding is a great sport for many, many reasons and thousands throughout the UK are now involved whether it be hacking on a riding school pony or and Olympic Show Jumper, for each rider there is at least three people backing them up on the ground. There is a huge audience out there to which we would like to advertise Bradleys Estate Agents.I hope you enjoy looking at my portfolio and thank you for spending a few minutes of your valuable time.If you would like any further details of how we may advertise or help your partnership, I would be available to do so.Yours FaithfullyLizzy Pyle
