About Me

NOW MAGAZINE BEST OF TORONTO ISSUE - 2006Best open mic SPIRITS"Perennial host Jo-Anna Downey's nickname is Mama, and she's acted as the stand-up world's unofficial matriarch for years, especially in the Wednesday-night institution known as Spirits. The beer flows as readily as the laughs (and you can't miss Downey's -- it should be patented). Pros and amateurs alike step up to the mic, and you never know what's going to happen. Some of the funniest bits, though, come from the back of the room, where the comics kvetch and convene. "About the Show: Spirits' Open Mic Night is the longest-running weekly comedy show in Toronto. The show has been hosted for the past 10 years by Jo-Anna Downey, affectionately referred to as "mama" and her flirty, irreverent style keeps audiences coming back each week. Primarily a stand-up show, each Wednesday features a blend of aspiring comics and working professionals. Its success can be attributed to the high quality of the performers and the consistent following that it has earned over the years. It is an eclectic, creative night that features short sets from a dozen comics. Spirits Open Mic Night sponsored by The Comedy Network every Wednesday night at 9pm at the Spirit's Bar & Grill, 642 Church Street, Toronto, Ontario.Anyone interested in performing should come check out the show and introduce themself to Jo-Anna!
